The mighty Class 74 (some questions!)

At the weekend I was visiting the widow of a friend in Scotland and she showed me a digitised slide show of her late husband's railway photos. One of them - taken at the Crewe Works open day in 1971 - showed E6101 (later 74 001) undergoing repairs in the erecting shop there. Until now, I had always believed that - following their initial conversion from class 71s at Crewe in 1967 - these locos were always overhauled or repaired at Eastleigh.

Page 81 of that excellent book - The Southern Way Special Issue 14 - as you suggested of course!

Nice photos....thanks for posting! Where was the second photo of E6103 taken? Looks like a single freight line with bull-head rail and some kind of small chemical plant in the background. The Poole-Wimborne-West Moors line perhaps....just North of Poole? That small Railfreight container on a four-wheeled wagon is a real bit of rail history.

6103 (74003) coasting down Parkstone bank into Poole in about 1973. It would be using its diesel power as no third rail into Poole then

That will be Pitwines Gas Works in the background: nearly fifty years old but to be demolished in a couple of years. It is now all retail and car park: what a surprise!

I was interested in that too. Not sure I’ve seen a conflat and container in a photo with a blue loco before? I remember those containers and the smaller type on road trailers behind Scammel Scarabs and Highwaymen too.

Greetings all!

I have a soft spot for the Class 74, im sure the reaction will be one of wide eye astonishment, but i do like the `Big Ed`. But some questions if i may!

What happened to the bogies/ traction motors/ generators etc once scrapped? Also the engines? 10 Paxman Ventura , would they be cut up as well or moved on to something else?

and ofc, a request for any photos or even video of them running would be very much appreciated.
Does this mean you're going to buy one of the Bachmann/EFE ones when they arrive? I'm looking forward to them.

I regularly visited Crewe Works around the time that they were being rebuilt - turn up at 10.30 on a Sunday, pay two bob (???) and you had a guided tour of the Works.

Dont suppose this is you getting your two bob's worth?1-3-2008_032.JPG

Already pre ordered the era 7 weathered 74010!
Didn't know a weathered variant was on the cards? I find factory weathering is not always as one might remember locos - it can be a very personal perception/memory - take the recent 08923 release, BR faded green with TOPS number. I photo'd same on AN (Allerton) depot in January '78, and although grubby, there were/are no signs of the streaks of rust down the bodyside panel gaps that appear on the model.

It may well have deteriorated further no doubt and the model may represent the loco as it was in later years. It was transferred to SF in Sept '88 by all accounts. I presume it had long since lost it's green livery by that date?

The 74 weathering (real things) apart from the faded and dull blue, seemed to be largely blackened roofs from diesel exhaust, and a very light-ish covering of brake dust along the lower sides mostly. Be interesting to see a weathered model, although I have ordered a pristine 010 - didn't notice a weathered example as an option at the time to make a judgement!

Having returned to my pre order from Rails of Sheffield, the model is 74009 not 10! I do like all the Accurascale and Bachmann `stuff` , a large step above Hornby in quality, for less money

They're very region specific locos so shouldn't sell out too quickly. I'll go through my local model shop as we should all support them.
I completely endorse your latter point, and I am quite happy to spend time and bus fare to visit old school shops, but I would urge you to pre order (for delivery to your shop of choice if possible?), as I have been caught out several times now for what I had assumed were very niche interest models, only to find them sold out at source only days (hours in one case) after noticing them as 'in stock'.

My suspicious mind wonders if there are a number of 'collectors' out there who buy en bulk, with a view to releasing months later at inflated prices via certain other sites, and if that offends anyone - tough!

I'm one of, and on the side of, the average modeller who just wants to buy one of this or that, without the feeling that everything advertised as new has been sold out before it ever arrives in the shops!

Very fair point. I'll speak to my fellow Daventry MRC club members and see if they can order one in (They run Thunderbolt Models) Otherwise Tony's Trains definitely can.

I spoke to my local model shop and they wont be getting any in, very very Hornby centric

A former colleague of mine who now resides many miles from our old patch, has a local model shop who wouldn't normally stock R-T-R models relating to our old area (different region/traction etc), but he has been fortunate in that the shop owner has been able to get items for him on a one off sort of basis. Customer service as it should be.

However we are off at a tangent with the danger of this moving to the hobby forum ;)

Still hunting for a video of a 74 at work (under diesel would be amazing).

Is there a sound file ?

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

Did the diesel have idle > full power and that was it, or did it rev through a range?

And second thought - why was the power so low at the rail?

Ah OK. Mine is Tony's Trains in Rugby. There are club members from Daventry MRC who run Thunderbolt Models not far out of Weedon. Either one if them could order one in. Another thing I'm going to go for is the Accurascale mk1 suburban as a 5 coach rake of those would be fantastic (but irrelevant to this topic)

Im looking at how to get a sound file for the paxman engine (starting, then at full chat), was also looking at the 71`s steam whistle sound as well. Myself looking at mk1, but 1970`s era, so blue with white top half (aka the boat train picture earlier)

Are there any recordings of a 74 on diesel still in existence? If not, then your best bet would be a Class 14 given both used the 6 cylinder Ventura engine. That won’t take account of differences due to locomotive body structures, silencing etc etc.

And transmission of course.

The diesel ran the booster which then drove the loco - so the transmission would be the same as the one from the 71 when that was on booster?

Also, does anyone remember or know how the horn sounded? The whistle from the 71 was replaced?

Which is of course very different from the hydraulic transmission of a Class 14.

The 71s were built at Doncaster and fitted with LNER brass chime whistles, identical to those fitted to the A4 Pacifics....but worked by compressed air instead of steam. The ten locos that were converted to 74s had their whistles replaced by standard Southern Region two-tone "raspberry" air horns and some - or all - of the twenty chime whistles ended up on the Isle of Wight, where they were fitted to the class 485 and 486 "Standard" tube stock.
