Coalition mothball plans to replace Intercity 125 trains
Plans to replace Britain's ageing fleet of Intercity 125 trains have been mothballed by the Government.

Plans to replace Britain's ageing fleet of Intercity 125 trains have been mothballed by the Government.
Philip Hammond, the Transport Secretary, said the future of the £7.5bn project would now be considered along with other programs during the spending review.
With his department facing spending cuts of up to 40 per cent, there are fears that the Intercity Express Programme (IEP) could be axed completely.

With many of the 125 trains dating back to the 1970s, passengers could eventually be left using 40-year old trains on some of Britain's main railway routes linking London to South Wales and Edinburgh.
The announcement by Mr Hammond could also jeopardise as many as 12,500 jobs which the previous Government said would have been created or safeguarded by the project.
His decision follows a review of the scheme by Sir Andrew Foster which said alternatives to the IEP programme had not been considered properly.

Agility Trains, the consortium which included Hitachi and John Laing, said 70 per cent of the contract would be spent in Britain, even though the first 70 of the planned 1,400 carriages were due to have been built in Japan.

The consortium promised to build a new factory at one of three sites: Sheffield, Ashby de la Zouch in Leicestershire or Gateshead, which would eventually employ up to 500 workers.
The IEP project is one of a number of schemes inherited by the coalition whose future is now in doubt, pending the spending review.

Hundreds of carriages which were promised by Labour to ease overcrowding have been put on hold and there are now question marks over the promised electrification of the lines between London and South Wales and also Liverpool and Manchester.

The Transport Secretary confirmed that a number of major projects were now up for review because of public spending constraints.
“IEP is a complex programme which has interdependencies with several other major rail projects. As expenditure on rail projects will be re-assessed in the context of the spending review, it would not be sensible to make a decision on IEP in isolation at this time.”
A spokesman for the consortium defended the project.
"Agility Trains has confidence in the performance of our product as shown by our readiness to offer not only trains, but a guaranteed service level to our customers. The proposal provides a step-change in capacity with relatively minor expenditure on infrastructure, as well as the opportunity to bring a major manufacturing facility and state of the art technology to the UK.
"We have expressed our commitment to continue working with the Department for Transport to respond to the points in the report, and to find an affordable solution which meets the government’s objectives."

They're the trains that just won't die. This gives me a better chance of getting to do the Highland Chieftain! XD

Excellent! Even with MTUs these are one of the best trains ever to run.

YES~!

HSTs MUST live forever. They are truly the greatest train ever built. Funny, I remember as a child I loved them, yet other enthusiasts hated them because they werent proper locos. Now, theyre rather more popular with entusiasts, as theyre, well, closer to being locos than anything else is...

And dont forget, like the Sugababes, and Trigger's famous broom, the HSTs arent really that old. Pretty much every single part of them has been replaced during their lifetime!!!

I was one of those enthusiasts who despised them. Largely because they saw off my beloved deltics. I would always try to wangle a loco-hauled train on the NESW route, even though it was only a 45/1 or 47/4 and took longer.

That's good news for the HST, even with MTUification and all the refurbs that have been done to the coach interiors, they'll still be way better than some plastic tat if other modern units have been anything to go by.

Good news for the HST, bad news for the railways in general. The Tories have never favoured huge investment in public transport and this combined with the budget cuts means that we will see standards decline as Cameron and Chums squeeze every penny they can from Network Rail.

Just say NO to Tories.

ECML electrification? IC 225? Station re-openings in the 1980s? Networkers for NSE?

Good news about the HST none the less!

We have been here before but very rarely have I been able to see anyone back up that one political party is better for public transport then the other. In the 1980's the anti-rail Tory government electrified many routes including the ECML. The replaced most of the regional railways fleets even if the pacer was born as a result.

What did Labour do since 1997, I am delibrately going for the negative but they scrapped most tram schemes (although looking at Edinburgh that is a good thing), didn't sort out the mess that was privatisation, didn't see many route miles get electrified, replaced the mk1's (or did they as it wasn't public money)

To me can't honestly say that Labour or Tory are good for public transport, the air lobby have done well out of the Labour government. Lib-dems maybe <D

I forgot about station re-openings, although they did see some in Scotland and Wales, but in the 1980's Scotland had Bathgate and the fife circle added to the network.

It's all very well being so critical, but when the last government has píssed money down the drain, what do you expect? More irresponsible spending?

If Labour was still in power, they would have to do a spending review as well.

The way I see this, is that the present government is looking at everything to see where they can get best value for money.

Well I forgot about Regional Railways modernisation (which is impressive seeing as I'm living with the trains that produced!), so we will call it even

IMHO the railway revolution that started in the mid/late-80s and continued throughout the 90s (all on the Tories' watch) has been the most significant upheaval in railway operations since they were invented. If you had told me in 1985 that in 20 years time there would be no loco-haulage, I would not have believed you. The replacement of loco-hauled trains by units is a much more significant operational change than replacing steam locos by diesels, or diesels by electrics.

I'd say you are in a minority there.

Nothing wrong with old trains, I would rather travel a long distance on a HST to a pendo. More comfortable train, better views out of the windows and a mobile signal (due to less metal)

Not in my experiance never got a seat on a HST but always on voyagers

Maybe that is because no-one wants to travel on a voyager <D However you can't blame the train for not getting a seat on it. It is not the 153's fault that people can't physically board when it is operating alone on some routes, it is the operator for not providing enough coaches! 2x 153's could make everyone happy and give them all a seat and it would be the same train.

And what does that tell you about the popoularity of an HST ( 8 cars ) against a Voyager ( 4 cars; 5 if you're lucky )?!;)

Well I don't perticualy like having to stand from Exeter To Penzance thank you very much

Why has the new engine runied them? If it had made them unrelaible then I would agree, but we notw have a train that us much more reliable than it was, and fit for longer service.

FFS again what has it got to do with the HST that you can't get a seat, it is one of 2 problems. 1 The HST is not long enough an more coaches or 2. The service is not frequent enough. Would you have got a seat if the same train was operated by 159 or a 4 Car Voyager that probably has half the seats of the HST? Are Voyagers tardis?
