Out of curiosity up I checked my dictionary, this is the 3rd definition given....
"Madam" often refers to a woman, usually older, who manages a brothel, escort service or some other form of prostitution for profit, that is, a procuress.
I should add I was oblivious until complaints were received at my work!
I've been sending job applications this week, and all the cover letters were addressed sir/madam!
Why can't we be more like the French and use the words Monsieur/Madame without irony or class distinction? Answers on a postcard please, but not to me.
