I believe this and the Lewisham extension are the reasons why the old stock were replaced anyway.

The original stock was the P86 and P89 Stock. The B90 Stock was built to operate to the Bank. B92 stock was built to standardise the fleet and the P86/P89 stock sold on.

And intriguingly both P86 & P89 Stock are now working on the Essen Stadtbahn in Germany, after being sold onwards they were converted to contain a cab and switch of traction current collection from the DLRs third rail to overhead wires. Certainly an odd sight - even more so given that the last was repainted out of their former DLR livery later than the B92s on the DLR!

Ah thank you for the correction. Knew it was something like that but couldn't remember the timings.

My understanding was that the rules were tightened after the Kings Cross Fire and it was easier to add end doors to the trains then resize the tunnel to have a bigger walkway.

Also I have seen refurbished P89 stock (with the single power doors) working the Bank branch - I know they were not usually used down there but it did happen on occasion

The Bank branch was built with a walkway but wouldn't be surprised if some of the 'wrong' stock.

If these trains were being made by Bombardier then there'd be plenty to talk about, but I guess with Siemens it's just business as usual so we have to find other things to talk about instead!

Remember that Siemens have 15 months until the first unit arrives in the UK with a brand new unit to put thorough its paces and train up the initial two batches of drivers for their testing and introduction phase.

Its likely to be a not so busy time news wise until shots/videos of the unit on test either get posted or Siemens releases them.

Correct.

The location that drove the requirement for 317s (i.e. BedPan) and then 319s to have end exits was between Farringdon and Moorgate. Not really single bore in the literal sense of actually being bored as the whole lot was built cut and cover, but structures were built on top of the tracks that led to single line tunnels both long enough and with side clearances limited enough to demand end of train exits. Since Moorgate is now closed, this limit was removed.

Not exactly.

The coupler is not "the other way up".

At least not if you mean the whole coupler.

The coupler itself - the mechanical bit - is the same. If you look at a 380 and a.n.other Desiro the concave bit is always on the right as you look at the front of the unit (i.e. the concave bit is on the drivers side) while the convex bit is on the left as you look at it (i.e. the convex bit on the second mans side).

I believe the heights of all those couplers are the same (that is more of a question than a statement).

The difference is the non mechanical contact box on a 380 is above the mechanical coupler but below on a.n.other Desiro.

Mechanical coupling for emergency rescue should be possible between the type versions, although obviously they can't connect further than that.

The same applies to 222s for example - their contact box is above the coupler wheras most other diesel units are below. I assume a 390 coupler must be the same as a 220/221 coupler ? But - another question - a 22x/390 coupler is not the same height as the EMU couplers ? I'm sure I must have some bits wrong here.

What plans are these? Surely the area is now saturated with railway lines!

Could some of the driver training be done at Siemans test track?

Yes, the drivers selected to do the testing and initial training will be travelling to Germany. The company council ASLEF reps have already been to the test track to try out a mock up of the unit although I don't believe this was powered.

Somewhere to stable S Stock has been the most common, and arguably realistic, suggestion for the Moorgate line in recent years - it's hard to see anything else happening in the short or mid-term future.

There is now a picture of the first full twelve car unit on test, in this months the railway magazine on page 7. Looks very very long.

Surprised its taken this long to start seeing pictures as they been running around under their own power for over a month.

Picture in Railway Magazine is an impressive shot of the whole 12 car.

From looking at that picture, and given that they will by definition be spending quite a bit of time in tunnels, may I propose the nickname "Vampires" for these, based on those long white fangs and evil eye headlights?:lol:
