Was on a GWR 166 earlier and we raced HD03 out of Newport, it started moving a good 3 seconds before us and we were quickly able to catch up to it and matched it's speed up until the tunnel. Puts the MK4's acceleration speed into perspective in comparison to a DMU!
Tbf to the Mk4s a lot of the speed disparity is down to the 67s that TfW pairs with them in their current configuration.

In many cases the Mk4s might do better without being attached to a 67. Well, they might if their doors would all operate properly.

But if you were able to run parallel all the way up to the 166s top speed of 90, the 67 would win.

Even in it's current 5+2 MKIV formation, a 67 will get to 100 before a 175 would. In the original 4+2 formation, it would get to 110 quicker than that same 175 to 100.

I really do wonder why you & a few others are on here & not the 197 page !
This is a trip reports thread which also features diagram discussions, updates and etc.

I appreciate some just want to enjoy the vanity project of the 67s, but those of us who regularly make trips on the Marches and who are interested in the diagrams, and the impact of those diagrams on other diagrams on the Marches have every right to comment.

The fact is that when the Mk4s fail it is us users who get delayed and/or our 5 car 197 split to create cover for the Mk4s. It might not be a reality some like, but it is the reality.

When the 67s and Mk4s operate in a bubble then the thread can be left to those who want to say how great it is that such unreliable stock is in use long after many more of the same went for scrap.

There are 104 mentioned as being scrapped in this thread: 2021 thread on Mk4 scrapping

I totally agree. At the end of the day its a discussion about the MK4's and their reliability has been terrible lately so its no surprise that people are negative about them.

Personally if im not in First Class I prefer a 197. i find them more than adequate despite what some people think! But thats my personal opinion/preference. The First Class is excellent when it happens. But its the unreliability of it thats poor.

There may well be reasons why the MK4's are performing so badly and not much can be done about it but its does not change the fact its a poor show at the moment.

Wed 27th August

1V31 etc - HD04/67029

1V33 etc - HD06/67017

1V91 etc - HD03/67025

1W13 is a 197, so I expect there will be some swapping later to balance the sets, unless they can get a set out onto this diagram later

1W13 aswell?

1W12 is 2-car again because it's other half has been stolen. So today the rubbish nature of the Mk4s is personally impacting my trip. I hope this reality is not disturbing to those who come on here expecting praise for the Mk4s.

Specifically planned for you to enjoy.
Maybe I should start posting all the 197 issues & failures.

And people are wondering why
The gen on here has dried up !

Feel free if you want to be childish.

But today there are two 197s covering for Mk4 and no Mk4 covering for 197s. Three consecutive northbound Manchesters are short-formed. Sorry that upsets.

Gen is appreciated but this is more than a gen thread. Perhaps start one for diagram updates only?

Er no. The Mods created this thread to do exactly that:

Moderator note: as the trains are now in service, there is no need for a rolling stock introduction thread; there is, however, a new thread for anyone who is planning a journey, currently travelling, or has travelled and posting their experiences, and equiries/updates relating to allocations etc :
It appears to be the whinges about mk4s that need a different thread.
