Just wondering how the MK4 services are going today? I have a first class ticket on 1W96 to Holyhead and I'm hoping to have dinner on the way up :D
Monday should see HD01 starting on 5V33, HD06 starting 1W11, HD04 starting 1W57, HD05 starting 1V31 if everything sticks over the weekend

Not bad today, no chance of the 18:30 from Manchester being booked Mk4 before New Year?

Still planned for December Timetable change as far as I'm aware.
There's also a plan to put first class onto Seatfrog to sell unsold seats at a similar time.

Would there be a case to add a 6th carriage to the sets or will 5 enough for the route? (Obviously if there is enough carriages left to use?

Think some of the platform lengths would be an issue
There's already a significant amount of SDO working with them anyway.

As a general rule, the current 5 car sets seem to provide adequate capacity.

Tomorrow HD05 is out of action for underframe checks over a pit following it hitting multiple trees today, HD04 was back up but isn't available until the afternoon so is planned to enter service for the 15:30 Crewe to Manchester with the 06:27 Manchester to Cardiff/12:49 Cardiff to Crewe being units.

Thursday sees 6 sets available for the first time in a long while, and all 6 should see use. HD01+67025 and HD03+67016 are planned to undertake trial runs out of Crewe to Chester/Shrewsbury, they all should be available for a couple of days before HD05 stops for exam over the weekend, once that's complete long missing HD02 is planned to head over from Crewe ETD to Crewe ATC early next week for a heavy exam, whilst it's been at the ETD it's had some bogie/wheelset work carried out.

Royal 67006 has taken over as the Canton rescue loco.

Bigger issue is the PRM access on longer trains with the short platforms. 5 car rakes guarantee every platform has at least 1 accessible wheelchair ramp, 6 car would lose that so is a non-starter.

Thanks for the replys, it just shows that there is more to stuff then meets the eye for the public who wouldnt know stuff like that and say "why cant they just add extra carriages"

How does this work? Is the problem first class?

IF the front and rear carriages are accessible then you would have an accessible carriage on all platforms?

The only issue I can see is first class, because you would need an accessible first-class carriage to be platformed at all platforms. There is an answer to that one too.

IF the Mk4 only operated services that stopped at Newport, Hereford and Shrewsbury between Cardiff and Crewe then the platforms would be long enough in any case.

IF we ever reached a point where more capacity was needed then an additional 197 could run ahead of/behind the Mk4 to serve the stations missed by the Mk4 with the necessary connections. I can see why TfW would be reluctant to see stations like Cwmbran and Abergavenny given a worse service because of skip stopping. The Liverpool trains (if added) would also provide for the stops the expresses missed.

It is all speculative and that is not the aim of a trip report thread. However, it does seem that longer Mk4 sets could run if the stars aligned.

The only section that the Mk4 set seems to struggle on is Manchester to Crewe, but that could be provided by a different operator as it is electrified and ripe for EMUs.

Not sure what you mean by they
Struggle between Manchester & Crewe
The delays are normal on the marches
Which results in the services been terminated short at Crewe or Wilmslow
To put the return service back on time

For capacity, though I have not been on one into or out of Cardiff at peak times. The Manchester to Crewe section is one of the few where the Mk4 sets actually get to flex their muscles.

Since the discussion was about extra carriages in the set.

Turning at Wilmslow makes sense from the TfW operation perspective, but is very frustrating when Avanti have also cancelled their train and there is a long wait for a Northern stopper. Even worse coming the other way when the only option is a Northern stopper 24 minutes before the TfW departure. The Wilmslow turnaround is not unique to the Mk4 though. Even with their shorter dwells and ability to catch up time, the 197s end up turning early a lot too.

Yes both the 67 & set on 1W11
& the 197 on 1W13 both turned at Wilmslow yesterday,

I am amazed some times at Manchester how many people join the 1st couple of carriages & stand
Obviously not realising how long the train is.

I was due to catch the 1630 from Manchester on Friday but with it initially showing as a 2 car 197, I bailed, only for it then to be set swapped at Crewe on the way up. I'd already altered my plans so couldn't go with my original, but is there scheduled to be a chef on board this train usually?
I’ve taken this pretty much monthly since July 23, never not had a chef onboard.

I caught the 1718 to Holyhead a few weeks ago on a Wednesday and it was full and standing in all four standard coaches, plus the first class vestibules.

....but usually only as far as Cwmbran in my experience - or maybe Abergavenny on a Friday.

Thanks both, so another case where the Cardiff commuter flow can be served by a local train. There should be more local trains to Abergavenny, but that is very much another thread.

Agree about people not walking up the platform at Manchester Piccadilly. There was far less walking required when the service was run with 150s. The 5-car Mk4 almost reaches to the country end of Platform 10 now.

First class doesn't really come into it, there's many stations now where first class isn't platformed. The issue is that the front standard coach can't be the one that's accessible as none of the TOE vehicles are and that's the only one that can couple to the loco. That's why the workaround of 1st being where it is was put in so wheelchair spaces are always in coaches 2 and 4 so guarantees one or the other is in every platform.

Obviously limited stop also solves that problem!
