005 last worked in normal service on 19th Feb (front of 1D55 21.07 Cardiff-Chester via Crewe with 175011). It was subsequently attached locked out of use on the rear of 1D48 00.38 Chester-Holyhead on 23rd Feb.

I believe 002 last worked in anger back in mid-January when it failed at Shrewsbury on a Manchester-south Wales working. After returning ECS to Chester a few days later. It subsequently worked LOOU on 1D41 21.36 Crewe-Holyhead from Chester with 175009 on 23rd Feb, then 1V94 08.05 Holyhead-Cardiff LOOU with 175004 on 3rd March before going ECS to Landore the following day.
175002s last working was 1V40 11.30 Manchester-Swansea as far as Shrewsbury on 17th January.

175111s last day in traffic was no later than 5th November but I’m not sure if it worked on that or the previous day.

You really do wonder what is going on.

However, the 1630 from Manchester has produced the Mk4 as planned and left on time. 2.5 standard is really not enough so glad for the advance firsts.

Disappointing to see 007 go, with a lack of suitable long distance units looks like 150s will be the backbone for a while yet
My prediction of being able to ride a 150 from Cardiff to Manchester in December is looking increasingly likely!

I've just spent a few days in Cardiff and happened to have travelled from Manchester on a 150 there and back (0830 on Monday which was 150253 and 1449 back yesterday which I think was 150240). I saw three loco-hauled sets heading south yesterday, so a few of them about, although presumably less than there should be?

I came away with much admiration for 150s. Yes they're not really suited to the route (the 1449 yesterday was packed from Hereford onwards due to the previous train being cancelled) but from what I saw these are near-40 year old units filling in for newer trains and both trains I travelled on largely kept to time.

The crews seem to be getting used to thrashing them to keep time. The wide and relatively fast doors result in quite short dwell times, unless the train is severely overcrowded. They are much better than 153s which lose time hand over fist with their slow doors and slow releasing brakes, not to mention the worse power to weight ratio. Anecdotally 150240 does seem to be a fast one.

My opinion of the 150s has gone up in recent times too. I caught one last week from Neath to Manchester and whilst not perfect it held up quite well with the timings for the most part. It was the signaling in Newport that delayed it and it didnt recover from that but otherwise it held up quite well. The one thing that is annoying is the lack of suitable space for luggage. There were many large suitcases all over the floor which can impact the number of seats used.

I wouldnt be surprised either. But hopefully we will at least get some 197s on the route by then and hopefully before September.

It was back in service for a short while.. I have been told it is now going off lease though.
Other one of lease? Do you know why and if more are planned to go? I know the 197s are coming, but they're not being excepted very fast. Bizarre that one is leaving when they are short of stock.

No idea, all I know is that the 3 that are at Landore are now going off lease. Don't forget that with the Treherbert line shut for the moment, there are some extra 150s freed up a little bit. AIUI 197 acceptance is due to pick up again once some issues are sorted.

I still find it madness that trains are being allowed to go off lease. It is ok to say that 150s are freed by Valley lines work but they are neither suitable for working alone on the Marches, or free from need elsewhere. I am sure the Bidston - Wrexham line would appreciate the 150s given what is happening with 230s up there.

There seems to be little point having a nationalised operator if said operator cannot see that providing a better service is more valuable than reducing costs by letting units go off lease. Letting units off lease when they could benefit the service should be the preserve of private companies.

Probably one for a different thread (couldn’t see one), but according to Angel Trains a new operator has been found for the 175s - anyone know/heard of who exactly?

There's a finite capacity on maintenance, though, particularly at Chester depot. It may be that 175s going off lease is being dictated by 197s coming in and the (in)ability to maintain all the 175s and an increasing number of incoming 197s at Chester.

That pretty much sums it up. There was, until recently, still effectively 25 175's still with TFW, whether serviceable or not that are still being maintained. 175002 off lease and 175111 stripped of parts at longsight.
There's now probably around 20 197's delivered to Chester. (Not necessarily accepted to TFW but still being maintained). Chesters Depot is only so big.

I wonder what the hold up is.getting more 175s back into service. We were told by mid to late April and they would all be back in service, we are now approaching the end of May and still a good amount out of service. Realistically are we going to have to put up with the current situation until whenever enough 197s can take over the 175 diagrams?

Chester has been completely full overnight of late - as in there's literally not been any more space on the depot or in the station itself to stable any more units.

I noticed that the Saturday Swanline timetable has reverted back to exactly how it was pre covid with a couple of services extending to Newport and the mid afternoon service going to Abergavenny. I'm impressed they have managed to find enough units for Swanline all week. Although spare 150s has helped massively.

Most of the fast services Swansea-Cardiff are 150s again today with a few 175s and 153 pairs (plus a MK4 on the first service!) There doesnt seem to be any sign of more 175s coming back, a few weeks ago it seemed to be slowly improving but now back to around 8-10 in service daily. I've a feeling this could be it now for the 175s and we are never going to see as many in service as we did.

Same I have to admit yesterday I travelled to Cardiff on a 150 today I travel back to Pembrokeshire aboard one. They weren't as bad as I thought but certainly not ideal

At least I'm not the only one who is strangely getting an appreciation for the 150s recently. As far from ideal as they are, they've done me proud on some recent journeys.

Anyone know what happened to 175102? It's parked up in bay platform 4 in Hereford this morning.

I totally agree. I'm appreciating the 150s more. I didnt even find a trip to Manchester that bad (aside from overcrowding and luggage everywhere) the train itself wasn't too bad. I think its just a case of making the best of it as can't see things improving for a while yet.

Agreed. Things are clearly not going to get better any time too soon, I'd love to be proved wrong of course! We might as well try and appreciate what we've got now before it all changes and becomes nostalgia!

I see there is a pair of 150s on one of the diagrams today too 1100 (ish) from Milford Haven to Manchester and 1730 return Manchester to Cardiff. Good to see they are trying to increase capacity where they can. The 1730 is always busy regardless of how many carriages. But 4 will certainly help. I find If there was plenty of space on a 150 it doesnt bother me just a shame they can't all.run as 4 cars

107 isn't it? Failed last Sunday lost 2 engines enroute South. Waiting towing to Chester for repairs.
