Chee Dale Halt between Peak Forest and Buxton. Used between July and September 1987 for a few Rambler's Excursions until a concern over signalling was raised in relation to running passenger services on what had been a freight only line for the previous twenty years or so. The excursions were never repeated and the platform was eventually dismantled and moved to Matlock where it became Peak Rail's Riverside Station.

I can remember a temporary platform being erected in Carlisle for weekend engineering works one weekend in 1995 I think on the spur from the main west coast to Newcastle line

I think it was on what is now marked in quail as through siding linking the Tyne Valley Line with the WCML. I used that platform as Darlington were playing at Carlisle that day - we lost.

As well as the Leeds (Whitehall) platform, there was a temporary platform of sorts within the main Leeds station during the Leeds 1st remodelling. It was an extension of one of the platforms (the Eastern end of what is now Platform 11, then Platform 8).

Platform 8d was extended on top of the normal running line so that passengers could board and alight trains on the middle through line. I can't remember if Platform 8 proper was closed for refurb or whether 8c had buffers installed and was treated as a West facing bay.

Theale I recall had a temporary platform last year (?) in connection with engineering work at Reading.

Ramsline Halt at Derby, uses only a couple of times because it was on a siding and rules had to be bent to allow access by passenger trains. Still there somewhere under the buddleia!

A bridge was washed out on the Shrewsbury - Machynlleth line (early 1980s?) and one - possibly two - temporary stations were installed either side.

Cannot remember the details.

Afraid not - they bussed Aber to Mach - this washout very nearly closed the line ! - but wise counsel prevailed. Was a student there at the time (1976-1979)

Temp platforms - how about Chart Leacon Open Day - circa 1980 - Thumper or Hastings shuttle from Ashford with an ASM in charge as pilotman. ?

Cockermouth in cumbria was left with only a rail bridge after floods a few years back and a temp station was built to let a train ferry people between the two parts of the town

Croxley Green LNWR station was burned down by Suffragettes in the 20s and replaced with a wooden temp platform structure which lasted til the end of rail service in the 90s - and collapsed due to extensive rot around 2007

Latter fact I am aware of as I was walking along it at the time on an exploration and had to extricate myself from the wreckage.

I think your on about Workington rather than Cockermouth cos that town has not had a railway since the beeching era as far as I know

It was used in 1994 for Carlisle - Whitehaven / Barrow line services, due to engineering work in the Carlisle area. WCML was still open into Carlisle, with connecting buses running to/from temporary station at Upperby.

Can St Peter's be classed as a temporary station? It was used for Northern Services whilst Sunderland was being redeveloped as part of the Metro extension there.

Yes! (Probably)

Already mentioned in the second, third, fourth and fifth posts in this thread!

I have a feeling a single temporary platform was constructed at Queen's Road Depot on Metrolink for an open day there shortly after opening. Interestingly, this is now under construction as a full new stop!

Princes Risborough northbound platform looks pretty temporary! Its a metal extension onto what was one of the through lines, hopefully it'll be knocked down and the original formation re adopted

An interesting one is on the Isle of Man Steam Railway. Although not UK, the story behind it is interesting.

All this year there has been a dispute with the bus drivers in the IoM, leading to many strikes by them. Both the busses and IoMR are run by the government.
As a result, to get the kids to school when the busses were on strike, a temporary station was built at Castletown and the kids went to school by steam train. it is called School Hill.

interesting, the planning permission does not allow fare paying passengers to use this station, as the kids get free travel to school. At the railway's gala in April, the trains stopped there for photo opportunities, but passengers could only get off to take pictures etc

The Wensleydale Railway built one near Northallerton (I think it was when they were trialling the Parry People Mover).

I might have my facts slightly wrong here so I'm willing to be corrected, but the down platform at Princes Risborough is actually pretty important from a design point of view because it was the precursor to a new a design which has since been widely adopted. It's a platform which can be built next to a running line without requiring multiple engineering possessions. I'm pretty sure it (and others like it) only require one overnight possession from ground being broken to the platform being open for business and it uses a fraction of the materials needed in a traditional platform design.

I thought the platforms at Warwick Parkway were the Stepsafe prototypes? Could be wrong though.

The interesting thing about the PRR down platform is that it is owned by Chiltern Railways, not Network Rail. Reinstating the down platform was not within the scope of the Risborough - Bicester track redoubling project but Chiltern identified early on that they would need it. However Railtrack were not interested in building/funding it so Chiltern asked them if they would be prepared to lease them the land so they could have the platform built themselves. Railtrack agreed and Chiltern had the platform and footbridge built at their own expense.

Wow :p

I had no idea this existed. Would love to know more.

The bridge at the end of the viaduct which is over where Waterloo Road joins Tulketh Brow was being replaced so the platform was built for a short while and a shuttle service from there to Blackpool operated. Part of the wall on Tulketh Brow had to be taken out to allow access, I think it is gated off now.

It was three lines over that bridge in the early 80s.

No, That was a different incident. I was talking about an incident near Welshpool some years later.

ps. Were you in the Aberystwyth Uni Railway Society when there? Do you recall its sole female member?

In addition to the aforementioned stations at Amlwch and Llanfairpwll (existing station temporarily reopened, IIRC), there were also some temporary arrangements at Caernarfon. When the Britannia Bridge burned down Holyhead's freight services were diverted to Caernarfon, but I don't know if this freight terminal was 'built' on a temporary basis or whether they just used what happened to be there. There had also been a temporary platform built near Caernarfon for the investiture of the Prince Of Wales: only used for a day before it was shut again!

That was the first place that come to mind when I first srtarted reading this thread...

Could Bishop Auckland West on the Weardale Railway be classed as temporary
