I will, of course, endeavour to supply photos once there is evidence of activity. Unless one of the other honourable members for Redcar beats me to it!

I for one cannot wait for the abuse we get to stop from the general public when they do close and fail. Work starts at the beginning of October. Nothing set in stone as to when it'll finish, I will update with pics

Yeah I was thinking that if for no other reason that it seems incredibly over-engineered compared to more usual crossing gates!

".......it seems incredibly over-engineered..."
So was the Forth rail bridge but it's not cracking up.:D

Is the level crossing shut to road or rail traffic at the moment, or are the gates still in operation at present?

I guess one of these telescopic/sliding/whatever gates could be made to look a bit like a traditional level crossing gate.

But they don't swing.
I seem to remember that the residents were insisting on something that blocked both the road and the railway.

Also probably wanted something that played a classy tune whilst closing, but you can't have everything. Most level crossings don't close the track. The one half a mile down the road doesn't....

Network Rail produced a press release this morning too, it is here: http://www.networkrailmediacentre.c...e-barriers-in-action-at-west-dyke-road-redcar
Picture from that release:

The press release includes a link to a video of the crossing in operation, I think from the other side to the one linked by TBY-Paul. You have to download it, it is 80MB.

They are actually quite impressive! Wonder if it's going to stay as a bespoke solution or if NR are thinking about rolling it out anywhere else. And Northern even arranged for a 156 to be passing when the Gazette was there

Bit late now as the new ones are now functional, but to answer your question....

The old gates were still functional and the crossing was open. However, it did succumb to the wind last week again.

I'm just glad it's over, it's been torture for too long.

From the video I would suggest their operation is flawed. If you think of a 4 barrier crossing the two barriers for the left hand (correct driving side) close first leaving a chance for any vehicle already on the crossing to escape before both the other barriers lower.

The video appears to show that the "far" side barrier makes it way across the road even faster than the "near" side one. That would certainly trap anyone still on the crossing.

It's a manned crossing. If the crossing is blocked then the signaller will deal with it.

Definitely the entry that closes first on each side...

They do seem slower than the 4 barrier solution though

I disagree. The light sequence is already started when the video starts and it's at good 12+ seconds before the barrier reaches the mid-point of the road. More than enough time to clear the crossing. Besides, it is a manned crossing at the moment and I suspect will change to a CCTV monitored crossing in the future.

But certainly no slower than what we already had, they also won't be defeated by a brisk breeze.

Win win if you live here.

Plus a lot cheaper than knocking down the signal box and moving it or realigning the railway and platforms to fit in one of the mounts for the barrier...

Thanks. I think a lot of things succumbed to the wind last week!

I suspect the elation will be similar (though probably more than, given how long this has gone on for) to my euphoria that my journey to work is finally roadworks free again (until after Christmas, probably, anyway!)

I think Crossover might have been asking about Plumpton, if you look at the previous post to his?

I was referring to Redcar - apologies for the confusion

Th old ones worked up until the new ones were fully installed. Some long night shifts later and I tested them myself. I think they are mightily impressive. Shame I've heard they are temporary and will be changed when the box migrates to York (I still think it's too busy of a crossing for it to be OD). They are the first but won't be the last, NR will be watching closely and adapting to other areas in the county.

And yes... Lasts weeks closures were wind related
