Shame I've heard they are temporary and will be changed when the box migrates to York (I still think it's too busy of a crossing for it to be OD).

Presumably they'll be able to knock the box down at that point and then put in standard barriers? Though I think it's going to be some years yet before that box and the others on the line end up going to York!

They are the first but won't be the last, NR will be watching closely and adapting to other areas in the county.

Remember though that 'temporary' and 'stopgap' have a different meaning on the railway to what they mean in normal life.

The new barriers look nice. I wish them well. New things do need to be tried. But a few things bother me.

If somebody does attempt to slalom through closing barriers, and bends one so that it jams, they look like they will be relatively hard work to remove and replace.

Sooner or later, somebody is either accidentally or intentionally going to poke something in between the bars while they are moving. What happens next ?

Hopefully they will never get seriously iced up. Defrosting that arrangement in order to close the barriers would not be simple.

Yes, that had occurred to me too.

Many full barrier crossings near me (Hampshire) seem to have spare booms permanently stored just adjacent to them, waiting for the inevitable collision damage, and you'd expect they can be fitted quite quickly by a few blokes with normal tools who'd show up in a NR van...

My guess is that the lack of motion and increased current draw would trigger a recycle (open and close), if that fails they will stop in their current position and the signalman won't be able to clear the controlling signals.

It looks like the bars are covered by clear plastic sheets, so there is no trap hazard. The only images I can find were taken at night so it's not too obvious.

I'm interested to see what the deflection is when the wind is blowing, and how accurately the gates need to hit those end stops.

Spot on I think, normal barriers in constant gale force winds will forever be broken, not only that but if one snaps and cracks someone on the head then I am sure NR will be sued

It looks like it will cost quite a fortune more than a conventional gate to fix when it inevitably gets rammed by some motorist at some point. However, it should at least prevent the said errant motorist from reaching the track; it looks quite robust.

Not really, if a car does hit and damage the gate they will fix it ASAP then will claim on the drivers insurance

I think, so far, it's been working well. Certainly I can't recall hearing about the road being closed at any point and we have had few windy days! Good work from Network Rail I would have said.

One interesting thing is that it appears that it is still being babysat by a pair of contractors as there always seems to be a van (not a Network Rail one) with two guys sat in it watching it operate. It's been in place for a while now so I would have thought any teething troubles would have manifested and been fixed by now!

Any word on if anywhere else is going to get this type of barrier? I see up thread someone mentioned it was being looked at.

See that when I was up there a few weeks ago but they both had their own vehicles though, probably a 6 month contract

Being a new product (for the railway) in a pilot installation it is probably sensible to provide this level of cover by specialist workers for an initial limited period until any unexpected bugs are shaken out. The supplier may have agreed at least partially to cover the cost perhaps as part of the warranty, and with the prospect of further orders in future it could be in their interests to keep the new client sweet.
