Was this 5727 returning from Bournemouth yesterday? If so, it has been out of passenger service since 15.08.25 and, given the current attrition of 455s, I had assumed it was destined for withdrawal.

It may have been a 458, but I am guessing that it was a 455 solely on the fact that 5B39 ran in the opposite direction without using a 5Xxx headcode, so something to collect 5727? I apologise if I am completely wrong about all of this.

Certainly looks like there'll be at least one, 37800 is fitted with tightlocks once again and is headed to Wembley Yard from Eastleigh tonight

there has to be an adjusted timeframe now for the 455s, surely now gone by December is a pie in the sky timetable. Gone by the end of March 2026 I’d say for final workings. Possibly a rail tour into April or Summer if a couple of units are kept on juice and standby

Based on the current 455 LTP diagrams, best places to observe same as things stand would be anywhere between Waterloo (main Sub plats) and Raynes Park, which would cover all routes that still have same working along. If you want a ride on same with some higher speeds, then head for a 2F Waterloo-Woking or 2G Waterloo-Guildford via Cobham service which run fast between Wimbledon and Surbiton, and the diagrams mentioned (2F & 2G) are part of those listed on the SWR web page (search 'diagrams').

I've done with numbers now; got the ones I needed so may just do Clapham Junction one Saturday. A few times at Waterloo in recent times; I've had "jobsworths" try and turn me off the platforms and I've got to the stage now where I just can't be bothered arguing. They are clearly bored or don't have enough trains to wave off now. Rides/thrash have never been my thing so really, I don't mind if they all went off to Newport on Monday morning. But useful info for the "thrill riders" who want a last bit of thrash. I will keep my eye on the ground however and get the last workings in when I can - trouble is I work a 50+ hour week with 3 hours drive commute each day so I'm getting a bit fatigued these days. I'm very close to becoming a "senior"

I completely understand where you are coming from. As a spotter in my school days (think SUBs and EPBs etc) I then joined the industry, but by the time the 508's/455's were being introduced which I had a hand in, it had become just 'a job', something to produce (on paper) and get done, before moving on to the next thing.I'm very close to becoming a "senior"
Only in retirement (me) and the same for the 455's (now), have I found a small reserve in my interests to go and photo some of the same.

Something I've never really seen acknowledged, is that when the final 455s bow out, that will mark the end of National Rail trains with roller blind destination displays. Since the final 150s and 156s got their TrainFX kits, 455s have been the only NR trains on the network left with blinds.

It's a shame SWR haven't removed them prior to scrapping. I'd have bought a pair!
I beleive the "Southern Region Route Codes" are still used on Great Western Turbos (165/166s) are they not ?
And the Chiltern ones as well no?

Keep an eye out on eBay as 455 blinds crop up there occasionally. I managed to buy one on there a few months ago.

There was a time when such matters may have been encouraged, albeit unofficially, but most of the old hands at Wim depot from my time have likely now retired, and the newbie's there are probably more concerned/too busy with the day to day matters that grab the attention of many on this forum, et al..
