So if the weather allows, some service north of Preston should be feasible, if only to Carlisle.

Think we've had this discussion (with respect to Avanti throwing in the towel on their services North of Preston,

Avanti trains were showing as running to carlisle today as late as 9pm last night, though.

Avanti have been running trains between Preston and Carlisle, and Carlisle and Glasgow Central, today as per my post #51. There is however now disruption due to overhead line issues, not at all surprising considering the winds here south of Glasgow.

Were/are LNER ticket holders able to utilise the north of Newcastle Cross Country services?
Yes, we were. It wasn’t obvious from the information provided by LNER on the NRE page but when we boarded an XC service first thing this morning to get away before the storm’s arrival, the conductor informed us they were accepting tickets as far as Newcastle. (We were heading south.)

One slightly odd thing is that the service we were on departed 12 mins early due to overcrowding. Not heard of that before, and would have been mightily annoyed if we hadn’t gone to the platform early.

Definitely mixed messages. BBC TV had a reporter at Preston station on the lunchtime news earlier today (Mairead Smyth) stating that nothing would be running beyond Carlisle today and showed a hand written white board at the station to that effect.

Also there was a semblance of a ScotRail service on the speed restricted Carlisle-Glasgow via Dumfries route.

I have no idea. I know LNER were not taking CrossCountry as Guard said it at every station we stopped at on the way down.
Hopefully such decisions are largely to avoid compounding overcrowding rather than motivated by commercial or parochial considerations.

While I agree it would be frustrating, the net result would be the same if it waited at the platform for another 11-12 minutes. The only difference is the passengers on the platform would get to see a train with the doors shut ready to go/a guard telling people they can't board, and passengers on the train would have another 11-12 minutes of uncomfortable standing. If it can move early and not disrupt the timetable and potentially arrive early, it might as well in my view.

I can't see ticket acceptance mentioned on the LNER/XC websites, or the status pages for LNER/XC on the NRE website.

It's really annoying as a passenger on days like this where ticket acceptance just becomes a guessing game, and enforcement of it is really down to what ticket inspector you happen to get. Either have ticket acceptance and publish it, or don't, and inform people of this.

I would have thought it would also to minimise delays due to the blanket 50mph all the way to Msrshall Meadows( Scottish border).
I notice it was only the 1008 & 1109 departures that departed early.

On the Grand Central due to leave at 14:08 from York but still at the platform and nothing moving in either direction for a while now.
Top marks to the signaller acting quickly and placing an urgent call to the driver, meaning the train could be stopped while it was still within the station. Better than being stuck in the middle of nowhere.

A shame that the train was delayed by at least 4 other incidents on the way south and was binned at Peterborough.

Although National Rail were warning of disruption on Friday it was not until Sunday afternoon that Avanti announced tickets could be used on Sunday -far too late to be any use!

I do hope the people who moan about line closures, speed restrictions etc who are now delayed/stuck on a train somewhere do not moan at all about the delay to the journey caused by these weather related issues

Lner platform screens states ' services may be disrupted after York due to an obstruction on the track between York and Doncaster'.

Looks to be just after Temple Hirst junction.
Either 1Y86 is involved, or is examining the line.(edit 1500 1Y86 moving slowly)
Lumo 1E84 at a red light at Temple Hirst.

Edit 1502 - services departing from York south onto ECML.
I was on 1Y86, there was a branch on the OHLE at Temple Hirst junction which meant we were 15 late leaving York, then according to the TM, we received an emergency call and came to a stop between Temple Hirst Junction and
Joan Croft Junction and ran slowly stopping and starting until Doncaster. TM thought we might have slightly hit the tree but I'm not sure

Looking at the cancellations, I don’t think any electric traction is going North of Newcastle tomorrow.
I praise CrossCountry for keeping services going north of Newcastle . According to realtime trains the biggest delays on 2 weren't a bad 33-35 minutes considering the storm!

I’ve a friend on the 18.07 Edinburgh to Birmingham at the moment. Over 100 late but I think he’s just glad to be moving!

ScotRail need to sort themselves out. Trains showing on platform displays as running but delayed but being told they were cancelled when speaking on the help point! How can they not even know what they are running?! Absolute shambles.

And 100% Delay Repay.

Like others have said, fair play to CrossCountry for keeping things ticking and serving Alnmouth and Berwick.

Yes, Peterborough was as far as we got. Originally we were told to get onto the following GC service from Halifax (?) 20 minutes later, and the guard said they had ticket acceptance on London Midland and we had the choice of trying to squeeze onto the GC or get the LM which started there. We chose the LM which had plenty of space all the way down, but was ironically delayed for 15 minutes due to congestion on the lines down to Kings Cross...
Arrived at St Pancras 2h40m late.

How many trains do Scotrail run per day?
How many trains have been cancelled?
Probably 1 or 2 people who have to manually cancel each service in the system, whilst also answering the help point, speaking to station and staff and dealing with the passenger information screens.

Could they do better? Obviously?

I use Journeycheck and the ScotRail app as a guide. Traksy is far better to see if a train is actually running or not.

I was once stood on a platform waiting for a train but could see the unit had become a 5xxx at its starting point and told my fellow commuters that the next train was cancelled. It took another 5 minutes before the displays showed the cancellation. It didn't help anyone get anywhere quicker but at least it was an extra source of information.

I would say it’s clear that a risk averse LNER and its weather partner totally overreacted to a yellow weather warning in Northumberland and there’s no reason they couldn’t have run even a slightly reduced service today.

It was nothing more than a brisk autumn esque heavy wind across the North East and Northumberland. Even the local BBC News relegated the storm to its 3rd item on Look North.

Wouldn't at all say LNER or any of the other operators have overreacted.

There was a Emergency50mph Speed Limit for all traction between Edinburgh and Marshall Meadows. Trying to run a trains service north of Newcastle in those conditions would've knocked out the rest of the route - and potentially left thousands of passengers stranded in Newcastle without road or rail transport north (if the expected weather happened)

There was also objects caught in the overheads between Newcastle and York, so I wouldn't say that the wind was that calm either.

With all due respect, I think that you're being overly defensive here. While I understand that the train companies are up against it, your average punter doesn't see it from an internal point of view; all they're focussed on is their own individual journey and whether or not they'll be able to get home. You can argue 'til the cows come home whether or not they should have made that journey in the face of "Do Not Travel" advice, but you also have to accept that sometimes that advice doesn't get through and you will get complaints about the way the situation is handled.

While many of us now have devices in our pockets that help us keep in touch with the latest goings-on in the world, there are still a few places in the country where there is little to no connectivity. There are also some people who simply don't keep up with the news!

When I woke up today it was bright and sunny, if slightly breezy. If I hadn't known that the storm was coming I'd probably have assumed that it was safe enough to head out for the day. Around midday it went from slightly breezy to the point where I couldn't hear myself think.

LNER and other TOCs are damned if they do and damned if they don't. Pull the service too early and they'll be criticised; pull the service too late and we end up with trains stranded in remote places with people complaining because there are no working toilets, etc.

Does anyone have any news on disruption in Scotland?

There must be flooding and trees down, especially in the north

This is yet another example of the widespread problem of two systems running in parallel but taking ages to “talk” to one another. Public facing systems churning out what is obviously drivel given what staff information systems are showing is a daily occurrence- usually leading to nothing worse than a loss of trust in the information given, but at times leading to missed trains or worse.

All the highland sleepers were cancelled last night. A little surprisingly the west highland line appears to be ok, as the scotrail website seems to be reporting a mostly normal service today.

Still slightly perplexed by the mixed messages yesterday at Preston essentially saying 'do not travel' (as there would be no trains running beyond Carlisle), but it seems that many trains did still operate to/from Glasgow Central.

Services south of Aberdeen are returning to normal. Passed two LNER replacement buses heading south on A90 this morning. First train north was about 42 mins late into Aberdeen apparently.

Network Rail spent last night clearing it of trees and other debris.
