Still, Northern are saving on the overtime bill and that’s really what it is all about.
Not really, if the agreements are anything like they are here they'd have to give 48 hrs notice to cancel an overtime shift, otherwise they'll have to pay them anyway.

Northern are proposing to run Leeds to Lancaster from mid-morning.
Correction. It appears Northern have now cancelled the trains from Leeds to Lancaster that were showing reinstated earlier.
Trains from Lancaster to Leeds still shown reinstated.

..

That looks either photoshopped or AI generated.

----

What was the reason given by LNR into why they binned off running Crewe - Liverpool trains today? Line must have been open as Avanti are running and TfW between Liverpool & Runcorn.
Yes, it looked familiar to me too.

No Scotrail services in my neck of the woods this morning yet.

At my TOC the weekly roster is posted the previous Thursday. Any shown rest day working has to be honoured so would just come in spare RDW at the booked time.

Leeds -Carlisle/Lancaster are not known for cancellations staffing issues.
Nor the Cumbrian Coast.
The wires fell over- I get that. I also get why you’d want to check everything before re-opening the S&C given the history of that line.

The Cumbrian Coast has staffing issues, as does Cumbria-Manchester Airport and Lancaster to Morecambe. Add it’s the latter that is really the issue here. There’s absolutely no reason why Northern can’t run a service at least as far Lancaster from Manchester.

There will always be some who think it is, just ignore them...
Given Northern’s track record, I’m going with them latching on to an excuse to save some money. There’s absolutely no reason why they can’t be running a service to Cumbria today. Everyone else is.

Worth noting that they called the DO NOT TRAVEL for today before the storm had even hit. They’ve planned this. It’s a disgrace but, as always, there’s no accountability.

The issued the DO NOT TRAVEL for Saturday on Thursday morning.

So that would tie in nicely with 48 hours notice to save some money…

But you don’t know that that’s really the issue, this is just your own supposition. Why would they need to use the storm as an excuse this weekend, when virtually every other weekend they admit their cancellations are due to crewing issues?

Explained above by several posters above why that’s not the case.

Network Rail Scotland said nearly 400 “incidents of damage” have been found including more than 120 reports of fallen trees following Storm Eowyn.

It said on X: “Almost 400 incidents of damage have been found since the storm passed, disruption is likely until at least midday.

“So far, we’ve seen over 120 reports of fallen trees across Scotland, along with damage to signalling systems, overhead wires, stations, boundary fencing, level crossings and even train depots suffering damage.”

It added: “We really appreciate your patience while we work to reopen Scotland’s railway. It’s going to be a challenging day, but our teams are working extremely hard to do this. We’ll keep you updated as the day goes on.

Are there significant problems in the Alnmouth-Berwick section as there appears to be unspecified delays to earlier services either side of that area?

Multiple OHL issues between Newcastle and Berwick. Items on the wires and LNER have suspended service North of Newcastle.

Thanks. With the benefit of hindsight the TOCs/NR will probably wish they had "done a ScotRail" and deferred the start-up of service.

It would have made sense not to say they were starting until the test runs had been conducted, certainly. Something non committal like "We are looking to restart services in the afternoon, but this will depend on what has been blown onto the line and how much damage it has done; if you are able to defer travel until Sunday, Monday or Tuesday or travel by another means and claim a refund we would strongly recommend you do".

It is still quite breezy up here, albeit the sun is out, and there is a lot of debris that has been dislodged still on the deck. Plastic, bags etc are still flying about.

I do believe it was route proved by a Class 47 and there were no obstructions. Obviously, the situation is dynamic.

Would the lack of a pantograph on the proving loco not have placed it at a disadvantage in its ability to prove?

Would just be checking for no damage to the OHL or obstructions. The OHL may be isolated and even if not wouldn’t want to risk damage. We have usually sent out diesel trains or trains in diesel mode to prove over the years.

No....the last thing you want is the route-proving loco pulling down the wires during a strong crosswind gust. There will be someone in the cab of the 47 watching the overheads intently for any problems.

They had route proved and NWR Tweeted this morning that the line was open,
However, further issues have occurred hence the suspension.
