It's a shame a home couldn't have been found for them back then- extra capacity on Merseyside or even the Coastway instead of the 313s- rather than letting them rot.

Considering Southern are lack of spares for 313s.. do you think anything will be salvaged from the 508s?

71504 is in 508122, happily running around MerseyRail. 71514 perhaps?

If so, these are 4 centre cars from the later refurbished SET units (207/208/210/211), which suggests that the driving cars might have a future as barrier vehicles, as has already been mentioned for the cars from 508207?

Still only the 4 vehicles from 508201 & 209 actually scrapped so far? 64669/692 & 71483/503.

I wish that at least 2 could be saved for a future on Merseyrail. Merseytravel who runs the concession with Serco and Abellio say in their own contract agreement that no passengers should be standing up for more than 10 mins.

As someone who previously worked for the company, I can safely say that that target is not being met on 2 trains in particular. One being a 3 car working on the Hunts Cross - Southport and one being the 08:21 West Kirby to Weat Kirby (via Liverpool loop) 3 car working. There are probably more trains in the AM peak that are seriously overcrowded, but these services jump out at me as being particularly bad.

I'm hoping someone will let us know when the last one goes, if only because a few weeks later someone's almost certain to pop up and involve them in some cunning cascade or other...

Can anyone confirm what units if any are left at Eastleigh?

Checking through the works blog posts gives a fair idea of the current situation, eg as of last Friday:

508s are getting very thin on the ground now with only 9 vehicles left on site. 71515 (508210), 508202, 64677 (508210), 508205 and 64697 (508203) have all been scrapped by Raxstar in the last two weeks. 71488 (508203) has been shunted into the scrap line this morning and 64654 (508203) is in the shed being stripped of re-usable components.

64664 and 64707 of 508207 have been taken into the main workshops by Arlington and lifted off their bogies ready for work to begin converting them to translator vehicles.

So what are the remaining out-of-service units and their whereabouts?

Thanks for the updates.

However from WillPS's perspective that presumably means it is no longer possible to make up actual units, as those are all driving car numbers?

It does seem from earlier lists that all the centre cars of the sub-class have definitely been scrapped, but can that be confirmed?

It will not be possible to make up a three car set unless there are other trailers stored elsewhere, and I am not aware of any. All those that were at Eastleigh are disposed of.

As an aside, 64710 and 64720 may have a new home to go to by the end of this year

Spares for PEP units? As with that 455 recently, it may be possible to convert to centre cars...

What's the logic behind keeping half a dozen driving cars but no centre cars?

Spares...

Driving cars can be turned into other things such as departmental vehicles easilly and don't need the trailers. (Compressors can be fitted in the carbody)

Ahhah! My initial thought was that driving cars are more likely to be affected by collisions; good to see some less moribund reasoning!
