Well yes, but he must get additional marks for the off the wall suggestion that they could just be maintained at Eastleigh...

Thats original, I am sure there are loads of fitters at Eastleigh (all trained up on the 508s) just sitting there waiting for something to do!

I thought that as they were stored in Eastleigh and being delivered directly to customers from Eastleigh and potentially any pre delivery work was being done at Eastleigh that there may just be someone that could keep two or three of them maintained for SWT.

My thought also went along the lines of; if there isn't anyone at Eastleigh that can maintain them then either the customer has to send their own fitters to Eastleigh to work out which ones currently work/are fixable or they have to wait for them to be delivered and hope that they work/are fixable and then maintain and fix them before they enter service. If either is the case it's not surprising that they are still in store.

Somewhere, not in London
Who said that TfL would be intrested in them, and if they where, who said it would be for LOROL services, there are other TfL run bits of the network that are potential stomping grounds for BR 508s.

How about the 508/3s for cover on the DC Lines when the 378s are sent away to receive their 5th cars..? ;)

You read it here first!

Do they need to be sent away? Surely they can be done in London and tested in London as well. I can see the first one being out for a while doing the testing but the rest of them should be relatively quick.

TfL are also increasing the size of the fleet, so delivering the extra units first could avoid the need to provide cover for those back at Derby. I don't know if that's deliverable, but i'm sure LO would like to avoid leasing 508's if they can.

Another possibility for 508 use for TfL might be due to the SLL route closure between VIC and LBG (and replacement by CLJ East London Line services). TfL were pushing for additional services on Victoria - Nunhead etc. route through Denmark Hill, Peckham Rye at 2 tph to help mitigate the closure.

However there seemed to be no clear plan as to how they might achieve this.

To see if the additional services are viable (inc. train length) before investing in more new trains the sensible solution could be to use some 508s to run the service for few years, starting with 2 units (6 cars) per train and may be going for a 3rd unit per peak service later if they manage to fill all the space in the first 2?

Increasing the fleet size is only an aspiration at the moment, nothing's been agreed about extra trains, only the 57 extra cars has been announced by TfL so far.

From new issue of Rail

TfL "is said to be giving serious consideration to a plan to overhaul and refurbish up to nine Class 508 EMUs in storage".

"The introduction could happen as early as December"

"No decision has been made on whether to go ahead with procuring the units."

"Railcare Sales and Commerical Director Jamie Borgeat confirmed that TfL had been in discussion with the company about work on the '508s' and said a feasibility study was under way into unit availability".

"Overhaul would be required on the running gear, with an interior refurbishment inculding longitudinal seating."

Eastleigh Works: 16.01
Eastleigh: 16.06/16.14
Soton Western Docks: 16.44

Locos will be 73141 and 73206. There is also likely to be a GBRf 66 and an NR 57 involved. Most of these will be being utlised as brake force

Translator vehicles 977087 and 975875 will be being utilised as barriers

The consist for this movement is now

73141+73206
Translator
2x508 vehicles
3xTranslators
66742

All of the translators are being utilised as barriers and brake force for this movement, and are not being operated in translator mode

So the cargo makes up only 22% of that train?

And the rules on unbraked carriages making up part of a train formation and the maximum speeds are?

That is why the unbraked carriages make up 22% of the train, but dont let "the rules" get in the way of you having a good laugh!

I'm going to speculate here that the 508 vehicles were unbraked & that's why the 'excessive' consist.

Picture here of the movement of two cl 508 vehicles. It seems to be wildly over the top 3 locos and 4 other carriages.

Coaches and locos required to provide sufficient brakeforce as 508s unfitted

Correct sir!

You are right of course, rules and regulations ,etc. but in the "real world" a low speed move of only a few miles , do they really require that much braking force ?
I imagine the cost must have been huge.

Yes, in the real world to run a train with no brakes there is a minimum requirement of brakeforce, and this was the minimum. I don't believe its changed much from BR days to the health and safety overkill that now rules. May look excessive but if it didn't stop and ran into the back of another train, then people will be in court and businesses shut down. Anyway, it made a colourful photo from what I've seen. More to come........

Mmm, interesting theyve managed to squirrel away £50m so far, also seems to contradict Modern Rails assertion that it will be cancelled due to cost.

After a long silence, some more activity from Merseytravel on acquiring new rolling stock for Merseyrail Electrics.

http://moderngov.merseytravel.uk.net/documents/s8139/Rolling%20Stock%20Replacement%20Programme%20Financial%20Update.pdf

Looks like the 507/508s days are numbered.

Assuming the 507/8s can be brought into service reasonably cheaply would they be of no use anywhere? Couldn't they go back onto the Sheerness line and the networkers now there be moved to strengthen peak time southeastern services? Even if the ones under inspection now are too far gone if Merseyside ones are displaced they could move to Sheerness and other Kent rural lines displacing networkers for 12 car operation once power upgrades and Gravesend rebuilding is complete in 2014?

All bets are off.........

At least 18 of the stored Class 508 vehicles at Eastleigh are to be scrapped in the coming month. More likely to follow

I wouldn't be surprised if LO looked at the costs involved and thought 'bugger it'.
