Or, maybe, they're scrapping half of them in order to get enough parts to restore the other half of them...!!

Looks like the 507/508s days are numbered.
Could some 508s be scrapped and parts used for class 313s if required?
Yeah, even the Pacers will eventually be scrapped within the next 150 years.
I thought they were going into warm storage alongside the strategic steam reserve?Yeah, even the Pacers will eventually be scrapped within the next 150 years.
Are these the first PEP-design carriages to be scrapped?
They are the first production coaches to be simply withdrawn and scrapped rather than be withdrawn due to accident/ incident damage so yes they are in the way you are meaning 90sWereBetter.
I see that list includes 508301-3 the supposedly better condition trio...
The following vehicles will be disposed of between now and the end of July, with the first two ready to be scrapped now
71483, 71503, 64669, 64683, 71517, 64726, 64690, 71524, 64733, 64650, 71484, 64693, 64661, 71495, 64704, 64655, 71489, 64698
Most of the remaining will follow shortly after
Vehicles have been offered to preservation groups at a very very minimal cost. Most didn't even reply. Suggestion was even offered to many that perhaps they could be used as stores and tools vans, shops etc by individual groups and railways. Once again next to none replied. One very large well known railway replied simply 'why would we won't one' we don't have a third rail?', or 'no thank you, we couldn't pull it with a steam engine'. The lack of vision was saddening but not unexpected.
I don't see a lack of vision, just pragmatism especially given the woes faced by much older units on preserved lines - if they can't be used under their own power the only option for a sustainable future is loco haulage for which they'd be neither suitable nor popular, and with no real following amongst enthusiasts they aren't going to attract much if any volunteer support or donations for their upkeep.
