Or, maybe, they're scrapping half of them in order to get enough parts to restore the other half of them...!!

Should give them enough light bulbs then but not a lot else then. ;)

Saying they were run into the ground is an understatement, plus the time they have been stood wont have done them any favours.

I can understand LO looking at them as it would've been irresponsible not to, but it seemed so unlikely especially for the period and in the number people were suggesting - this would appear to be confirmation that's not going to happen.

71483, 64669 and 71503 are the first vehicles being disposed of and that will be likely by the end of this week

Depends on how "long term" you are looking, eventually everything goes for scrap! ;)

I could start a thread about the 378s going for scrap, while not relevant at the moment, in 20 (or so) years it will be factually accurate.

Yeah, even the Pacers will eventually be scrapped within the next 150 years.

No, the first carriages were scrapped in the 1990s - one carriage of 314203 and two of 507022. 508118 was also scrapped from 2001 following an arson attack on the Wirral.

They are the first production coaches to be simply withdrawn and scrapped rather than be withdrawn due to accident/ incident damage so yes they are in the way you are meaning 90sWereBetter.

I didn't notice any mention of that in 90sWereBetter's original post. Regardless, the centre car of 507022 was undamaged but scrapped due it not being required, so this would really be the first instance in the sense mentioned above.

I see that list includes 508301-3 the supposedly better condition trio...

And modified for compatibility with 313s on Silverlink/LO Watford DC - why those first? Would be kinda cool to be able to preserve these (or one of at least) but 313001 will likely end up remaining the only PEP, sometime in the future (currently 313201 with Southern, will be returned to original spec for the National Collection IIRC).

Shame they all are going. They were pretty extensively refurbed not too long ago weren't they - I've got the years 2006 or 2008 in my head could have been around those years? Then they were withdrawn very shortly after and allowed to rot by southeastern and whoever was leasing them out.

Vehicles have been offered to preservation groups at a very very minimal cost. Most didn't even reply. Suggestion was even offered to many that perhaps they could be used as stores and tools vans, shops etc by individual groups and railways. Once again next to none replied. One very large well known railway replied simply 'why would we won't one' we don't have a third rail?', or 'no thank you, we couldn't pull it with a steam engine'. The lack of vision was saddening but not unexpected.

Every avenue has been looked into to get at least some of the better ones back on lease but every discussion has come to nought.

They can't be stored forever and now their time has come. The connex units and former LOROL are in a dreadful state as regards corrosion and as such are first for the axe. Many parts are already removed

All possible parts will be removed to support existing fleets and a handful of vehicles may remain intact as spares left in situ and for other possible projects.

The 2 motor cars from 507022 ARE still in use.

The DMS A Car from 507022(no 64426) is now part of a 314 unit in Scotland.

The DMS B Car from 507022(no 64388) is now the DMS B car in 507004 (the unit it collided with) The DMS B car from 507004 (no 64369) has been scrapped.

The centre car from 507004 was less damaged in the collision that the centre car in 507022, so they decided to use keep 004, however the DMS B car in 507004 was damaged more than the DMS B car in 507022.

I hope they donate parts such as door motors to Merseyrail to keep them going for as long as possible!

I don't see a lack of vision, just pragmatism especially given the woes faced by much older units on preserved lines - if they can't be used under their own power the only option for a sustainable future is loco haulage for which they'd be neither suitable nor popular, and with no real following amongst enthusiasts they aren't going to attract much if any volunteer support or donations for their upkeep.

They'd probably also prefer to wait for squadron withdrawals rather than take any of these currently doomed vehicles as those that are still in service are going to be in far better condition...

Could the centre cars not have gone to SWT to strenghen the 455's.

They could, but I think they'd have needed a fair bit of work to make them rail-worthy- plus overhauling to the standards of SWT's 455s. Plus that would just mean SWT would have a handful of 5-car 455s in amongst their 4-car units which would, I imagine, be an absolute nightmare to diagram!
