Always annoys me when people confuse the two (I've even heard people from London do it), but that's for another thread.

One often wonders if they do it coz they are thick or making an allegedly clever joke.

Paul has pointed me in the direction of an answer he provided at 16:59, Croston (Post #3321), which everyone - myself included - seems to have missed, when in practice it should have been the current station in play and not West Ruislip (and, later, Pewsey). On behalf of everyone, please accept our apologies

In an effort to correct this, and to complete my Birmingham set, I shall choose Birmingham Moor Street. In each case (Pewsey, Croston and BMO) it is possible to travel to a major city whose name begins with "L", even though in practice each of these routes is less frequent than a nearby but less direct alternative between the "L" city and their ultimate destination (Preston, Taunton/Exeter and Birmingham itself).

Pewsey was also almost entirely served by InterCity before privatization.

From Rowley Regis we shall head down south to Patchway. Both of these two stations serve an area that is better known by a different name that begins with "B" (Blackheath; Bradley Stoke), although the station's name is technically relevant to the local area; in addition, both are fairly close to a major regional shopping facility.

Not getting at anyone in particular - just that that particular misspelling grates almost as much as spelling 'have' (well 've really) as 'of'. Distressingly frequent on here.

Another town or city associated with a martyred saint is, of course, Canterbury, where one has a choice of no fewer than two stations to choose from. If I was forced to pick one, I would, I think, pick East.

Maidstone is another Kentish settlement to have both East and West on different lines, but it goes one further and has Barracks as well!

By the way, isn't Canterbury West geographically east of East?

I cannot trace a station called Farnbrough Main, but there is one called Farnborough Main, which has two platforms. Therefore, I will go for the last clue set by Ivo and say......................
Crowborough is a two platform station managed by Southern, as is the case with Edenbridge Town.

Grateley is also an ex-Southern Region station which remains unelectrified.

Winchester was of course the capital of King Alfred, who was famous for not having the culinary skills of Jamie Oliver. King Alfred burnt the cakes at Athelney in Somerset, but, although trains go thorugh there, they no longer stop, if they ever did. You'd probably have to go to Taunton, which would be the nearest station.

Weston super Mare was built by the Bristol and Exeter Railway and is currently managed by First Great Western, as is the case with Taunton.

"Super Mare" is of course an upmarket way of saying "on Sea", and does not refer to an improved kind of horse.

And if we want to talk about "on Sea", surely the UK's finest On Sea destination must be Southend-on-sea, which is another with two stations, and if I was forced to pick one, I would pick Victoria.

Southend Victoria is a station with a line leading to London, which is not the fastest route available from that town.

Birmingham Snow Hill is the same.
