I think the line referred to was that of the Birkenhead Joint Railway which was a joint venture between the Great Western Railway and the London and North Western Railway and the line section that ran from Hooton to the closed station of West Kirby ran paralell to the Wirral peninsula coastline that faced Wales.

For some strange reason, OpenRailwayMap lists part of the line I was thinking of as being part of the Chester and Birkenhead

Then, without any indication, it then turns into the Birkenhead Docks Branch.

In any case, I've somewhat amended my original entry, but there is a connection there through to West Kirby!
