There are no lifts at Pokesdown, and the only access to the platforms is via stairs from the bridge. The original lifts are now disused albeit with evidence of their former existence still in place. There has been a campaign calling for the restoration of lifts at the station, which appeared to be successful with South Western Railway being required to install new lifts by 31st December 2019. However, to date this has not been done. A poster at the station entrance advises passengers unable to use the stairs that South Western Railway will organise a taxi to take the passenger(s) to Bournemouth, where staff will be able to assist.

Skewen is also approached from one direction by a cutting whose stone retaining walls are supported and connected by so-called overtrack "flying arches".
