Is there a diagram showing the changes and track directions?

Platform 1 ("old freight loop") now fully open, it appears that most westbound TPX trains are now using it.

Both bays are now in use (2 & 5)

Shame there are still only 18 car parking spaces, which are now pay and display. Seems to be a shot in the foot, with four trains per hour to and from Manchester from next week.

I went down for a proper look today and Platform 1 is huge - it stretches back east almost as far as the bridge over Rassbottom Street! Some pictures here

Yes there are some there from yesterday and the previous Saturday. You are maybe just seeing what's in your cache due to the dodgy html what I wrote, so maybe try Shift/F5?

I've stuck an "expires" thingy in to see if that helps in future!

Shift/F5 did the trick.

Many thanks and great pictures.

I was interested in the "Car" stop signs.

1 and 3 Eastbound show 4/9 car stop at the end of each platform. Do you know what other stop signs are on Platforms 1 and 3 going westbound.

I like you am puzzled by the stop signs on Platform 4 in the Westbound direction which you commented upon previously.

As far as we were aware platform 4 wasn't bi directional and therefore there should be no need for these signs but they are there.

It has been suggested that platform 4 can accommodate a westbound departure for a train having arrived in that platform from the west and going back out to the west. However that shouldn't need those boards although the signals suggest a westbound departure is possible.

I didn't think platform 4 was generally accessible from the east but there maybe some track work to the east that makes this possible of which we are unaware and which wasn't shown on the NR diagram. Apart from that the only way platform 4 seems to be accessible from the east (If this is permitted) is to a train departing eastbound from platform 3 onto the eastbound line which could then reverse into platform 4 but what would be the point.

I'll check tomorrow... I know there's a stop sign on Platform 1 level with the end of Platform 2, as that's where the westbound TPXs stop now, but I can't remember what it says. It's just visible here but obscured by the 'OFF' indicator.

As you say, P4 is probably useful for Victoria reversals in case P5 is out of use, but I also remember there being a VT 4/5 board down the end of the old Platform 1 which I was told was for stuff coming up from Guide Bridge but then reversing to Newton Heath, but that board faced west.

You can just about see it on the left-most lamp post in this picture.

As far as I know, apart from the new trailing crossover at the east end of the station, the next one (also trailing) is where the Victoria units used to reverse at Diggle Junction when the old bay Platform 3 was taken out prior to the work.

Incidentally, I did notice a few people who - err - "forgot" to get off at Stalybridge once, so presumably stayed on to scratch the Diggle crossover so presumably had to endure a totally pointless ride up to Diggle and back :)

(Unsubstantiated accusations removed *innocent face*)

-- edit --

I just remembered the old "Shunt Limit" sign (signal?) in the old Platform 2 visible here so presumably stuff could reverse in the old Platform 2 as well.

-- edit --

OK so a swift survey today reveals:

  • a plethora of stop boards on Platform 4 westbound
  • a mystery covered up stop-board-to-be on Platform 3 westbound
  • an unexpected eastbound stop board on Platform 1
thusly:

Small Print: Not to scale, E&OE, any likeness to any station living or dead is purely coincidental, yes I know the platforms are more curved than that but I'm rubbish at drawing curves

Another curiosity I noticed is that the west-bound signal before the station (actually just east of the tunnel) has two junction indicators at positions 1 and 4.

I could understand one (to differentiate between platform 1 and 3), but what is the other one for ? (or did I imagine it!)

Thanks for the information on the stop boards and the signals.

Platforms 1 & 3 we knew were reversible and the boards on these in the westbound direction seem to make sense. I would think the blank one would show 2/3 like platform4.

However none of us were under the impression that Platform 4 was reversible and was eastbound only. It was suggested by someone that a train arriving in 4 from the west could terminate and then return to the west and this was confirmed by your comment previously about trains from Guide Bridge but that I think was before the changes. However none of this would require stop boards for west facing departures.

It maybe that contrary to our belief and the diagrams put out by Network Rail that 4 is reversible (your signal comment could suggest such) or that a train could depart eastbound from 3 or maybe even 1 and then reverse onto 4 but that would seem pointless and cumbersome particularly as 1 and 3 are reversible. Despite what has been said and the diagrams everything points to 4 being reversible. If you could get a better look at the signal it may help.

Two other small things

1. I am surprised that the stop boards eastbound on 1 and 3 don't also have "s" as opposed to 2/3 and 4/9.

2. All Westbound TPE trains would seem to use Platform 1 as they will go to Piccadilly apart from the Newcastle ones which use 3 even though they are going to Piccadilly at present. I wonder if this is in anticipation of the Newcastles going via Victoria from May 2014.

I await hearing from you if anything else turns up but will now be off line for about three weeks.
