They were my regular commute in my first job (Herne Hill to Holborn Viaduct). The ex-First Class compartments (and the odd half-compartment at the driving end) were particularly popular. Then in the late 1970s the SR-type 2HAPs were all declassified and used on the Central Division as 2 SAPs until their withdrawal. (I once travelled on one from Streatham Hill to Victoria.)
MLV's wouldn't have had problems with gapping, as they had batteries (primarily for use on non-electrified quaysides). (Was the transition from battery to juice-rail-power automatic, or did the driver have to operate a switch?)
I recall reading of one incident when a boat train had to start from Dover Priory because of a power failure at Marine, so an MLV was pressed in to service to shuttle intending passengers up the hill. Standing room only - obviously - but it wasn't far.
