It's currently (as at 17.50) 27 °C in Kenilworth. This, despite the fact that the sun sets in 55 minutes.

Seriously, what? I don't see how that is trigonometrically possible for the sun to provide that much warmth when it's that low in the sky.

Three Octobers ago there was widespread snow in the UK. Now there's this.

Again according to the BBC, temps in London are to reach 30C tommorow. Think this may break a record.

27°c in Droitwich Spa (18:55).

I too cannot understand how it is this hot. We are 52° N (well I am) and it has gone past the autumn solstice; I would expect low-mid 20s maximum with the current conditions, not 30°c!

I remember it being this hot over the Easter weekend (which for me involved extremely prolonged use of fursuits and Tube ticket halls—fair enough to say I stank both out).

I remember it too, albeit not in a fursuit but I did have the tube to deal with as well as a packed Sheperd's Bush Empire for a saxon gig

Eagle and class172, it's warm air that has been drawn up from the Mediterranean area by a fortunate positioning of the areas of high and low pressure combined with the the jet stream wind having shifted to the north of where it usually is.

If the jet stream was in the usual place we'd have only had a couple of days of the good weather, not a whole week or more of it.

You have to remember that the sun heats the ground and buildings too. This process continues throughout the day.

So, even when the sun gets close to the horizon the air continues to be warmed by heat radiating from hard surfaces such as walls and road surfaces. As long as that is greater than the heat being lost into space then the air temperature will remain high.

You may notice that temperatures fall quite rapidly once we get past 8p.m.

But as the air is basically warm to start with (as was mentioned earlier, originating from the Mediterranean) the temperatures will not fall very far overnight even under clear skies, so that tomorrow morning it may still be 15C at sunrise. This means that the temperature already has a head start, and the energy needed from the sun to raise the air temperature 12 degrees is enough even with the sun at a much lower angle than in mid June.

Speak for yourself. I had to stay indoors all day because it was too hot. This is October for Pete's sake it's meant to be dark and cool, not sunny

There is a definite media conspiracy here.

Their lazy journalism of jumping on any bandwagon without bothering to check any facts has backfired on them and now they are furiously trying to cover themselves by pretending that all weather that is not average, is actually freak weather and signs of 'climate change' or whatever is the latest buzzword.

Talk of jetstreams may be relevant for an international meteorological conference, but is basically evidence of bull****ting by weather spokesmen when speaking to the public.

The only reason we have warm air from the Med / N. Africa at present is because there is a large high pressure centred over Denmark. If that high had been just to the west of Ireland, which is nothing unusual for high pressures, the northerly winds would have pulled down air from beyond the Arctic Circle and we would be lucky to reach 15C with the sun shining during the day, and northern areas would be getting night frosts and sleet or snow showers.

Both of these scenarios are very possible in early October any year. They are not common admittedly, and are the extremes of what we can expect, but they are certainly not 'freak' weather. They are the result of our island's geographical position.

Unfortunately, two weeks ago the media was full of the "forecast" (they present it as fact with large banner headlines) that we were going to get heavy snow early in October. No one actually investigated where this stuff came from, and anyone can set themselves up as a weather 'expert' and get publicity by feeding endless headline grabbing rubbish to the tabloids.

Now, rather than admit they have been conned by dodgy forecast information and have egg on their faces because the exact opposite weather has occurred, the media are trying to hide behind the idea that the weather is now out of control, which it is not.

Thanks for that, however, this ammount of media hype is part of the course nowadays.

If you want to talk about media conspiracy what about their efforts to brainwash the people of this country into believe sun is good and rain is bad?

The fact that they said yesterday about trying to beat the previous record (which it did, just) proves that we've had this hot weather in October before!

I've said for years that we have quite warm and pleasant autumns and even winters. I expect we'll have many more nice, clear and 'surprisingly' warm days ahead of us between now and Christmas. I don't see it being particularly crazy, or prove of global warming - especially as we didn't have that much of a summer this year in terms of heat. I think we used our portable air conditioner only a handful of times this summer - but it's been on every night for a lot this week just gone.
