1) Leaf-fall season

2) Wrong type of snow season.

I don't - they used to slash services at my local station by 50% on weekdays in autumn (Pleasington / Cherry Tree and Huncoat / Hapton were alternated from late early October to the December timetable change). Luckily, this stopped after autumn 2008.

The Met Office defines the seasons as the complete months, thus:

Spring: March 1st - May 31st
Summer: June 1st - August 31st
Autumn: September 1st - November 30th
Winter: December 1st - February 28th ( 29th where relevant )

Yes, but they only do that for their own convenience (because their statistics are calculated on a monthly basis).

Also the Met Office monthly means are calculated by adding the day's maximum temperature to the nights minimum each 24 hour period, and dividing by 2.

Do this every day for 3 months and you have the Met Office mean Summer temperature, which bears little resemblance to what the public notice as the temperature for the day.

After all there are many ways to arrive at a mean temperature of 16C. You might have an average maximum of 26C and night minimum of 6C, or alternatively 20C and 12C.

I know which I would prefer, but they would both look the same to the seasonal statisticians.

I bet I can count the rainy days for the last six months or more on one hand.

My garden has simply not grown properly all year. I have a beautiful cotoneaster - home to sparrows and blackbirds - its never properly recovered from the pounding it got last winter. I also have some lilies that should be six to eight feet high. They are barely up to my knee and since the flowers have come out full size (about three inches in diameter) they look decidedly odd.

However the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway has had dry sunny weather every Saturday and Wednesday since it opened from from Duffield and has done a roaring trade. It's an ill wind as they say.i

There should be a good balance between hot and sunny weather and cold and wet weather, a bit of both is best, and extreme amounts of any weather condition can have implications.

Nice day yesterday, cooler today and peeing down with wind from tomorrow.

However, BBC reports that it has been a bumper year for fruit in the hedgerows (some very nice blackberries and apples last week in Kent). Of course this normally means that a very bad winter is on its way.

With today being the last day of summer, thought that it may be appropriate to create a thread reflecting on the weather throughout June, July and August.
Indeed, it was yet another case of the "Great British summer" with frequent showers and longer spells of rain, punctuated occasionally by some sunshine. Appart from the two "mini heatwaves" we had, temperatures were disapointing and, yes, it was the coolest summer in 18 years. I'm not one who craves for 100 degree heat constantly, but when wandering in the pouring rain through Newcastle, soaking your feet, and sending chills up your body, you do sometimes ponder about living on a remote desert island where the sun always shines.

But, maybe things will get better through September... :roll:

In this part of Scotland I watch the weather forecast for London with envy- we are normally 5-10 degrees c behind (on a good day)

I got sunburnt once this year and that was in Birmingham at the end of June.

However as I am fair with red hair (whats left of it) I don't mind to much -but just a warm day more than five times a year would be nice

We are off to Hereford today in a party of 4 leaving from Wilmslow station on the ATW Club 55 offer. We booked the tickets earlier this week having checked the 3-day weather forecast for Hereford before booking, but the good weather originally stated to be there today, has changed somewhat since then. Still, that's British weather for you.

Well apparently, according to the Met Office (strength of source debatable!!) parts of the UK will see strong winds from the hurricane that took place on the East Coast of America.

Whats so great about summer anyway, its hot, its sweaty its crowded, its jammed with kids and my hayfever normally plays up. This year I think its been a good one with my ideal sort of weather, sunny patches and clouds. April was a bit hot though, which April was it when it snowed?
