So where was summer?

With today being the last day of summer, thought that it may be appropriate to create a thread reflecting on the weather throughout June, July and August.
Indeed, it was yet another case of the "Great British summer" with frequent showers and longer spells of rain, punctuated occasionally by some sunshine. Appart from the two "mini heatwaves" we had, temperatures were disapointing and, yes, it was the coolest summer in 18 years. I'm not one who craves for 100 degree heat constantly, but when wandering in the pouring rain through Newcastle, soaking your feet, and sending chills up your body, you do sometimes ponder about living on a remote desert island where the sun always shines.

But, maybe things will get better through September... :roll:

On a personal note my summer was in the USA in June when we went around theme parks in New Jersey, Virginia and Pennsylvania. That area was hit by a freak heatwave for the time of year that saw temperatures hit 40C for 5 days on the trot.

Back in the UK the only time we have seen hot weather this year for more than a couple of days was April again, if I am right this year will be about the third year on the trot that April has seen the best of the weather.

Out of 20 games of cricket this season I've played, I'd say 4 at most were played in 'ideal' summer weather, mind you walking Bridport and Princetown branches this summer was done in fair weather, not too bad, but hardly a classic I'd say
Children back to school next week, so the sun will be out...guaranteed

I prefer it like this sort of weather as hate extremely hot and humid summers.

I have been running archery beginners' courses every Tuesday evening for the last 18 weeks, in north Leeds. In that time it has sometimes been chilly (last night for example). But we have never been rained on. (OK, so I have jinxed it for the last few weeks of the season)

You can tell that the West Yorkshire area hasn't had too much rain this summer as the reservoir near the farm that splits the M62 has been going down steadily all summer.

We haven't had a great deal of rain, but it has been no hotter thanw arm, and there haven't been that many sunny days. Mostly it has been overcast with sunny periods, and not as warm as average.

I think most people's definition of summer would include sun and heat, both of which have been sadly lacking here!

Me too, 2006 was a better summer than anything that has come after.

That said, I have to say that this summer has been completely satisfactory and I have seen plenty of hot weather and sunshine. It's been a marked improvement on the very wet summers that the likes of 2008 were. Admittedly, with the benefit of Birminghams' comparatively dry and stable climate there is rarely any adverse weather in comparison to other areas of the country, but even here over the last couple of years before this one the summers' have been depressingly overcast, cool and wet, suggesting that they have been even poorer elsewhere: Whenever I have popped back to my native North East from the sultry West Midlands over the last three months or so I have found the weather to be fairly mixed and unpredictable, but nothing to really complain about in my experience.

Overall, I'd say it's been a pretty good summer! Though it does seem to have finished for good now, over the course of the last week or so: Here comes the cold weather and dark nights.

Maybe it's because of Global Warming, or maybe it's because of climate change, or maybe it's none of these and the Experts couldn't predict what day it'll be tomorrow, never mind what the climate will be in 20 years time. But anyway, I do have to say I prefer the autumnal weather.

It does seem strange that many years ago, when Global Warming was first stumbled upon by the media, there were these great predictions of Mediterranean weather in southern England, hot and dry summers followed by mild and wet winters.

It seems as almost the opposite has happened, in that we have had rather cold and dry winters followed by not particularly warm and rather wet summers (since 2006).

I too notice the same trend, we seem to have our summer in May every year now!!

I don`t do the sunbathing but its not been warm at all. Its freezing at work, no heating until October and if this carrys on I will have to find the hat and gloves.

So they say its the coldest summer for 20 years. Tomorrow is the Meteorological office first day of Autumn (so soon)

My cat now sits on the radiator which as you can guess is on in the morning and late at night, so even she feels the cold.

Suppose we can hope for Summer 2012 !!!!

I think that August has been pretty poor by usual standards, however if you failed to spot summer this year then I guess you had a pretty rough deal up there in Newcastle.

Yes we had to put heating on for the first time in three months.

I thought Summer actually ended at the Autumn Equinox around September 21st?

Sometimes September can have some lovely weather - be interesting to see if that happens this year!

What?! It's been absolutely roasting. Gorgeous warm weather for most of April, May and June, plus at least a week in August.

What really annoys me is that it was hot in May and June, whilst I'm still at school, then basically the whole of August was a tip! It rained nearly every day when I was on holiday in Cornwall. Being my luck, September will have balmy temperatures (hot) as it has done for the past few years. :x

It certainly hasn't felt the coldest summer since sometime in the 90s (not withstanding what remains of today ). Perhaps it's because central England got much the same temperatures as is always did?


Not until the clocks go back will I believe the good weather has returned.

This kind of topic always annoys me, try telling those counties in drought earlier in the year than rain is bad? Rain does more for the environment than strong sun

I would be happy for it to be sunny all the time, but when coupled with hot air from the Caribbean (like we saw towards the end of June for several days) it can become uncomfortable.

I don't mind if good/bad weather is justified. It's certainly fair to say that fog is bad aviation weather. Rain is good for growing crops but bad for tennis. It's the assumption that everyone likes sun and dry that gets me

I thought Summer actually ended at the Autumn Equinox around September 21st?

The Met Office defines the seasons as the complete months, thus:

Spring: March 1st - May 31st
Summer: June 1st - August 31st
Autumn: September 1st - November 30th
Winter: December 1st - February 28th ( 29th where relevant )

If you add the days up, summer is always longer than winter! How do we know it's summer? Simple - the rain is warmer...:roll:
