Well, I reckon the guard saw what the group were like at Sittingbourne and decided to stay in the safety and warmth of the rear cab. Surely that counts as the guard not doing their job correctly and efficiently?

The guard was more than likely observing the art of 'self preservation'

For the record, my previous comments about courts and penalty fares was regarding feet on seats. I completely agree about prosecuting smokers.

All excellent points - until one of them drops their fag down the seat cushions or into a litter bin or something and 60 minutes hence you have a metal shell rather than an EMU!

It does happen - I seem to recall that's how the ELR lost their disabled coach.

You sure about Merseyrail? i'm sure you can smoke on their stations? can anyone telll me either way if they do or not?
All ATOC companies agreed to ban smoking on all station buildings, including platforms (covered and uncovered), station concourses and footbridges with effect from July 1st, 2007.

Fishguard station seems to be the exception to the rule.

In Nottingham (and Nottinghamshire), all bus and tram stops have signs up saying that it is illegal, but I've never seen a PCSO do anything about it when people have lit up.

A spokesman for the company said: "It is a health and safety issue because we feel it is too dangerous for passengers who want to smoke.

It means that claiming "all the Network Rail staff who smoke on most stations in the country" is ridiculous.

That's not what I said at all...

I said "think of all the NWR staff that do". That to me, suggests the ones that do, not every single NWR employee in the country. Its simple grammar really.

What you said was, "Just think of all the Network Rail staff who smoke on most stations in the country".

If you want to lecture me on grammer then maybe you should have said, "Just think of all those Network Rail staff that do smoke on stations". A subtle difference yes, but it changes the dynamic of the sentance.

Btw, have you been to "most" stations in the country AND seen NR staff smoking on them?

Disclaimer: I smoke 20 a day, so my views may be biased. <D

Seems to be a fair few of the H&S bridgade on this forum, I doubt though that most members on here remember when trains had smoking carriages, now they enter a state of shock if they see a ciggie being smoked where it shouldn't be! To me, people moaning about, especially if its on a quiet platform somewhere in the open, or in the Front/Backcab of a train are quite frankly being pathetic. Its not like they're enclosing into your space.

And do you really expect Guards to challenge a group of people who are smoking / tanking a bottle of whisky on a train? To be honest I'd expect them to stay in safety, they're not there to be Bouncers. If it were a group of RPI's or BTP police then fair enough.

And re: Railtours, if at the discression of the guard and they allow you to have a crafty fag in the brakevan etc, then I feel this is fine, as your not going to be affecting the passengers who may be in the passenger saloons / compartments.

Thats my pennies worth....

Even so, that still doesn't suggest all network rail staff do smoke on stations...

As a matter of fact yes I have seen staff, and i know a few who do.

I cannot see the problem of smoking on stations, or even having a particular place on them to do it. Bring back the HST smoking carriage!

So if you want to argue about grammar, try spelling it correctly and try spelling sentence correctly.

So you have been to most station in the country and seen NR bods smoking on them as your previous post suggests? Didn't think so. So what right do you have claiming so.

And yes, I am aware that a few staff do, but certainly not the majority in my experience.

With regards to grammar, you were the one that originally brought up the subject (being slightly condescending in the process), so if all you want to do is pick holes, then go for it.

Dunno about England, but in Scotland the law states that it is an offence to smoke or to knowingly allow someone else to smoke in a public place. So that should therefore not happen in Scotland.

One thing I have noticed is that, since Scotland has had the ban, everywhere's much cleaner. I used to go to my local golf/crocket club frequently which both allowed smoking until the ban. I noticed no difference.

I then board a Hull-Rotterdam ferry. The smoking room is absolutely revolting! It's only once I saw that that I realised how dirty tobacco smoke is, and it is disgusting being forced to passive smoke.

Who put a pound in you?

And, do you even work for any railway company? Do you have any experience?

you seem to be some n00b to me.

And dont call me an "NR bod", im not some chav, its NWR, NR is Northern Rail, NWR is the abbreviation for Network Rail.

Did I specificly call YOU an NR bod?..No. And yes, I do work for a railway company and I do have experience, both past and present.

An "NR bod" is slang for someone that works for Network Rail, its not ment as an insult.

"Edit" - OK, probably taken my issue with this slightly too far now. Apologies if I have offended anyone.

I've never smoked in my life, so my views may be equally biased.

That's fine up until the point where I relieve another driver and it becomes my train.

Stale smoke in the air, fag ash all over the desk and, every now and again, a telltale stray butt. Not a wonderfully pleasant environment. There have been times when I've gone home smelling like I've just had 20 a day, and I'm supposed to be working in an environment where I should never come into contact with a person smoking a tab. Perhaps I should make a point of leaving the cab in an equally disgusting state for the next driver.

But then that's just my view. ;)

Stale smoke in the air,

Ahh well, thats where Droplights come handy on the oldies, and Aircon in the new stuff! ;)

fag ash all over the desk and, every now and again, a telltale stray butt.

a quick five second dust off and your laughing! <D Or have a go at who your relieving and tell them not to be a messy pup if they feel the need to smoke whilst driving!

Perhaps I should make a point of leaving the cab in an equally disgusting state for the next driver.

What, you mean splash the tea/coffee all over the desk, and etch the panels with driver graffiti and banter? Hehe, I think you'll find the Smoker and Non Smoker drivers already do that! ;)

Ive wiped & scrubbed over dashes with Speedclean 21 and dolloped the '81 Opal Green Cab paint over drivers graffiti! So you can see why smoking in the cab usually was the least of my worries!

I have been on several trains where it has been patently obvious from the smell that the guard is smoking in the back cab! That does affect passengers. Quite aside from that it is clearly against the rules, which are not only there for passengers health, but also safety - how many fires has smoking contributed to?!

IMHO 95% of the punters wouldn't give two hoots about it. And probably wouldn't notice anyway. There just seem to be a lot of ned's on here who are so called enthusiasts want to drop the staff in the Drink over seemingly minor things.

Your certainly Management material there matey! Keep it up!

Safety wise, I think you'll find Smoking had a very small % of fires that you had on trains, obviously no Risk Acessment ruled it out. It was the governing rules of this Nanny, H&S obsessed, Money Grabbing Country! <(

You can legally smoke on Fishguard Harbour station can't you? I think it's Fishguard.
I believe it's because people were walking over to the level crossing to smoke and were causing a lot of safety problems.

Oh great!! It's freezing outside and now I have to lose all the heat out of the cab through the droplight just to clear the fag smoke. Thanks.

Fag ash doesn't just "dust off". It flies back up into the air and settles wherever it will, including on my clothes and in my hair.

What, you mean splash the tea/coffee all over the desk, and etch the panels with driver graffiti and banter? Hehe, I think you'll find the Smoker and Non Smoker drivers already do that! ;)

No, I wouldn't sink that low.

I just despair a little that a small number of my smoking colleagues take the view that it's OK to still have a smoke in the cab because it doesn't affect the punters and there's only a small chance of being caught. Fine, that's as maybe. I'm not going to make an issue of this at work, but since you've brought the subject up here I feel that it is appropriate for me to say that I think such actions are selfish and show little respect for the driver that is booked to relieve them.

Granted, driving cabs are disgusting places to work. I don't like the driver graffiti in the cabs or the coffee stains on the desk, but at least they don't actually affect me in any way. But if I take over a train from someone who's been have a crafty drag there's a good chance that I'll get home smelling like an ashtray. As a non-smoker I don't see why I should have to tolerate this, and nor can I believe that my colleagues could show such little respect and consideration.

Platform staff used to use the 1st class section of a 317 laying over at Liverpool St as a smoking lounge, even though Liverpool St was a no smoking station long before the ban. The effect was that the 1st class section was like a scene from "The Fog" and smelt like a bog when it went back into service a quick email to Nat ex soon put paid to this. Why should non smokers have to put up with the smell and risk lung cancer from those selfish enough to have no consideration for others. Stale smoke and smell takes a long time to go. Years after the smoking ban came in the upper decks of Blackpool Trams still had an unpleasant smell as the smoke penetrates deep. Imagine a kipper it can sit on the counter of a fishmonger for several days and doesnt loose its smoked smell,
The only effect that smokers have on non smokers is to make it uncomfortable for them. Smokers have a serious health effect on non smokers.
As for standing on the platform of an open country station, try standing on a cold winter rush hour morning when the platform is crowded and some inconsiderate person ignores the smoking ban and everyone gets a facefull of their smoke
A smoker wouldbnt enjoy a non smoker farting in their face and sharing that aroma with them after a good night out having downed 8 pints a curry and a kebab. well most wouldnt:oops:
