Smokers on the train!

Dunno about England, but in Scotland the law states that it is an offence to smoke or to knowingly allow someone else to smoke in a public place. So that should therefore not happen in Scotland.

It is an offence to smoke in someone's workplace. The brakevan is a workplace. Hence why it is illegal for 'white van man' to smoke in his van.

IMHO 95% of the punters wouldn't give two hoots about it. And probably wouldn't notice anyway. There just seem to be a lot of ned's on here who are so called enthusiasts want to drop the staff in the Drink over seemingly minor things.

Safety wise, I think you'll find Smoking had a very small % of fires that you had on trains, obviously no Risk Acessment ruled it out. It was the governing rules of this Nanny, H&S obsessed, Money Grabbing Country!

I have found it extremeley interesting just how many people have flouted the smoking ban since its inception. From passengers smoking blatently on the platform, in the toilets, outside the carriage doors at stopping points and even on the train....

And full credit to the staff at an unamed northern railway station who, on the tannoy system said:

"Could the gentleman smoking on platform 4 please stop smoking as it is a criminal offence."

Well, lets just say he did as he was told!

But it is pointless.. A platform is an open place, same as a street, and even if you cant say smoke under the canopy, i cant see the problem of smoking at the platform ends, especially on quiet stations.. and what is the problem with smoking out of a Mk1/2/3 window? Doesn't harm anyone

I can see problems with smoking out of train windows straight away. Stale smoke lingering about the vestibule area and if the internal doors are open this will waft through the train. Unpleasant smell when boarding because someone is puffing away.

Not to mention some idiot doing it while the train is on the move.
