Of course there is nothing wrong with "Skip" bashing, it really depends if you like the class or not.

If the work has dried up for the class 67 then whack em on Freight / Railtours or even the Waterloo - Exeter line for a few years instead of those horrible Super Sprinters 158/9 which should of never been allowed to take the service.

Indifferent. He just commented on how nice it was to travel on a loco hauled train.

In otherwords "I dont like these dirty degenerate folk, but its nice to be on a Mk2"

Anyways glad the Tauntons have a bit more time on them, means I can still get winners in and its the one I can actually do too (well I can do the Paingtons but I have to pay go to Bristol for that)

Alarming though this may be, it seems that I'm coming round to liking skips. I've had a glut of skip haulage lately, and I've enjoyed it all (except the time 40145 failed of course). OK, it'd be much better if these trains were being hauled by proper locos, but given that the alternative would be odious and characterless DMUs, I'm all for it! Degenerate ones, I salute you!

Can anybody confirm if the Paignton's ran today? Below is from Taunton Trains website,

Friday 1st October marked the end of the Loco Hauled diagram to Paignton but all is not what it seams. The 1st was the end of the fixed contract, the set will now operate on an 'as required' basis which could see the set still operating to Paington for an indefinite period. As no direct unit cascade had occurred from other companies FGW are yet to receive their clapped out un refurbished rolling stock to replace the Class 67's and Mk2 stock. On the 1st October 67020 prepares to depart Taunton with the 19:18 to Bristol.

So to clarify, does this mean that the hauled set to Paignton continues in daily operation until further notice, or that it will only be out as required, i.e. they are going to attempt to run it with the existing fleet of units but if none available the 67s will be called upon?

Aye, and without wanting to tempt fate, if it's anything like the Emmelshausen branch in Germany it'll still be running in 10 months time!

Paignton ran today. Not sure why all the hype but the last day changed from the 1st to the 15th weeks ago!!

Some of the staff operating it might have liked to have known that for sure - most of them were under the impression Friday was to be the last day. Anyway, it was a good excuse for me to rejoin the roadshow for a day :)

Ooops. I was going by what FGW Train Planning were saying.

Assume a good day was had by all though?

Does the demise of skips on the Paigntons mean that the 17:00 Cardiff > Taunton is now a 150? Isn't that going to get rather overcrowded?

Not happy to see that 67016 and 67017 are back on the Tauntons.

For the last two months there has been four winners, I'm going over tomorrow and hey presto my two highest mileage machines are put back on!

Still, better than a 150 though...

That would be a last resort as 003 is not converted so would need extra staff to operate, the ones that are converted are 67012, 013, 014, 015, 010, 029 & 018

Surely all skips are pretty much the same. They're all ETH-fitted etc and no freight sub-class. How is it that some of them are 'winners'?

Not all skips can work with a DVT on their own

It's not a spectacularly big difference though is it? I would guess all the WSMR ones can, so does this mean that the non-WSMR are more prized than the others? It's hardly the level of excitement that was caused by getting a 37/0 instead of a 37/4, or even a 47/3 instead of a 47/4.

I belive the main difference is that the listed 67s have remote fire fighting equipment that can be operated through the multiple working cables- this is why any other require a driver riding in one of the cabs when pushing- basically, they're there to deal with the unlikely situation of the engines getting a bit too warm...

I think its the fact that some members of the class are certainly easier than others to have, and people will always be interested if something different from the norm appears. Oddly, my last 3 skips were ones which regularly work passenger trains - 007, 014 and 030. Finally got the last of these on a Sleeper move earlier this month!

I had 7 on the sleeper on 28th September. I even had a crafty flail under the cover of pitch darkness leaving Pitlochry.
