I think he was over for some class 37 tour (Spitfire?), so may well have been taking in some GMs on the day before.

Very sad that an Irishman of all people has to come to England to get GMs (other than the deadly dull Irish 201s that is)

Got skip 9 (not required ) to South Gyle this evening. Hellfire clag leaving Haymarket! 20 (required) was on the following Cardenden working. Saw 7 at Perth on two sandite wagons as well. Also 23 nearby Portobello and an unidentified one in the dark at Newcastle.

In short, I saw a lot of skips!

When I was a bit younger, the 47s were used on the Thunderbirds at Newcastle. Got quite sad when they they were being replaced by the 67s. However nice to see a 67 these days, or just anything loco hauled.

I’m likely to be a degenerate skip basher on at least one day in 2011 once the two Chiltern loco hauled return trips (Using W&S stock and locos) between Birmingham/Banbury and Marylebone kick off. Now that I’ve discovered the times for the Chiltern workings, I’ve figured out a way to collect some mileage behind all the Chiltern/W&S trips barring one of each.

Yeah, there was something reassuring having a RES 47/7 (Or occasionally a pair) sat in platform 12 all day. I remember they would occasionally belt the Newcastle thunderbird down to Ryhope Grange sidings south of Sunderland station and back again, I was told it was to charge the batteries, could have been keeping up route knowledge as well. The 67 sitting over by the water tower just isn’t the same. I hated it when the 67s took over Thunderbird duties; 67s have got even less soul than a 47 (which says something) IMO. I remember there seemed to be a bit of a RES 47 swansong at Newcastle just before the Skips took over, there seemed to be considerably more of them round Newcastle than was the norm at any opportunity.

What is the problem with people not liking "Skips"..? Is it the shape, not built in England or they don't have a simular sound to a 37.

Because they're (relatively) new- and then, somewhat, and because they're modern, they're quieter and cleaner.

Well the 'skips' look a lot better than than Grand Centrals 'special needs' hst front ends!! God I wish with that experiment in the 1990's they'd just reverted the front ends back again; what a mess!

Yeah spent all day on Friday with 16 / 17, combined well with the 37 trip on Saturday. Was with two others, who were more freight people so they got the 11:02 to Newport and spent the rest of the day there.

That was my last trip on the Tauntons, I've enjoyed going over the last two years to the South West, wasn't a bad route with stations a good distance apart, decent mileage, freight yards to be passed on the Welsh side, good thrash through the Severn Tunnel and south of Bristol was nice greenery.
