Signal Box Opening Times

Others will know the precise difference between a cabin and a box. If it helps, other lines used the term cabin, including London Transport. The GWR made matters clearer by putting up nameplates including both the name of the location and a descriptive title such as "Signal Box".

From the general appendices I've looked through, I found the Great Western Ra8lway one to be the most comprehensive.

This is one, whuch from memoey, dates from the 1930s onwards.

Can anyone confirm if there was a signal box at or near Box station adorned with the plate "Box Signal Box"?

I recall sometime in the early 90s a mention of the end of an arrangement at a station, on the Aberdeen-Inverness line I think, where the signaller was provided with a bicycle to get between the box and the levers for the points at the other end of the loop.

I certainly saw a signalman using a bicycle to carry out this process at - I think - Muir of Ord, probably in the late 70s.

LT use of cabin is simply legacy imported by the US influence from Yerkes etc. It is no more deeper an issue than imported US word. We also imported US term 'tower' for a depot signalling control room e.g. Neasden Tower, Stratford Tower.

Do not seek a precise difference between 'box' and 'cabin' since there is no precise definition of any of it - signal or command or control + box or cabin or tower or room or can be anything and everything in size and scale and scope and technology. You may well be able to find a definition on one railway but that don't neccessarily apply to another railway.

The name Junction Road for the highway is older than the railway as it dates back to 1813, when it was built as a feeder to Archway Road.
