Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle KStJ DL was born in Edinburgh on 22nd May 1859. He is best known for his four novels and fifty-six short stories about the fictional consulting detective Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Dr. Watson, which are milestones in crime fiction. He died on 7th July 1930, aged 71, in Crowborough, Sussex.

Welsh whisky is usually considered as a modern invention, but some claim that whisky was being produced in Wales as early as the 4th Century. This is disputed, but there is no doubt that a distillery opened in Frongoch, Gwynedd in 1887.

Holy Trinity Church, Tarleton, was built in 1886 to the designs of W Basset-Smith. It has some furniture and woodwork by Robert "Mouseman" Thompson, also known as "Mousey" Thompson (1876 – 1955), who was a British furniture maker notable for the mice carved on them. Other examples of his work (the chapel screens) can be seen at the Church of St Matthias, Malvern Link.

The village and civil parish of Much Hadham (historically also known as Great Hadham) includes the hamlet of Perry Green. The sculptor Henry Spencer Moore OM CH FBA (1898 – 1986) settled there in 1941; his house ("Hoglands") now forms part of a sculpture garden featuring his work; it is run by the Henry Moore Foundation.
