The name "Tower Hamlets" originally referred to a Liberty in the historic county of Middlesex. Another and better known Liberty in London is the Liberty of the Clink, in Southwark.

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle KStJ DL was born in Edinburgh on 22nd May 1859. He is best known for his four novels and fifty-six short stories about the fictional consulting detective Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Dr. Watson, which are milestones in crime fiction. He died on 7th July 1930, aged 71, in Crowborough, Sussex.
