During the 19th century, Darlington Quaker families such as those of Pease and Backhouse emerged as major employers and philanthropists. The industrialist Joseph Pease gave Darlington its landmark clock tower in 1864. The clock face was crafted by T Cooke & Sons of York, and the bells were cast by John Warner & Sons of nearby Norton-on-Tees.

In Bloxham church there is a memorial to Lieutenant Colonel George Wade, bringing to mind his much more famous namesake Field Marshal George Wade, grandson of an officer in the Cromwellian Army and best known for the roads he constructed in Scotland. The second part of Teffont Evias' name is said to refer to the village of Ewyas Harold in Herefordshire, the main seat of the lord of the manor of Teffont at the time of the Domesday Book.

Moccas Court, north of the village, replaced the old manor house which once stood next to the church. It is a fine Georgian country house (now a hotel) and was built between 1776 and 1783 for the Cornewall family by the 18th-century English architect Anthony Keck (1726–1797). He is credited with designing some fifty country houses in the South-West of England and South Wales, including Flaxley Abbey (a former Cistercian monstery which is now a private residence) near the village of Flaxley in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire.

The only Grade 1 listed building in Harrogate is St Wilfrid's Church, Harrogate, which was designed by the architect Temple Lushington Moore (1856 – 1920). It is often considered to be his masterpiece, and is one of two of his churches with this listing. The other one is The Church of All Saints in Stroud, Gloucestershire.

John Donne Church of England School, Blunham is Voluntary Aided and caters for children aged between three and eleven. The school is named after the poet John Donne, (1571 or 1572 – 1631), a former Rector of Blunham parish. In 1602, Donne was elected as a member of parliament for the constituency of Brackley, although the post was not a paid position. This was a parliamentary borough consisting of the market town of Brackley, in Northamptonshire. It elected two Members of Parliament to the House of Commons from 1547 until 1832, when the constituency was abolished by the Great Reform Act.

The English radio presenter and journalist John Peel (1939 – 2004), was born John Robert Parker Ravenscroft at a nursing home in Heswall in Merseyside. After his National Service, he worked as a mill operative at Townhead Mill in Rochdale and returned each weekend to Heswall on a scooter borrowed from his sister. While in Rochdale during the week, he developed long-term associations with the town as the years progressed.
