The above-bolded settlement's name is of Old English origin -- meaning "eagles' cliff", from earn = eagle. The word still lingers in modern English as "erne", applied to the white-tailed sea-eagle: rarely actually used, but greatly loved by the setters of cryptic-crossword clues. In the north of Ireland is the River Erne -- name of different derivation: from the mythical Princess Eirne. On that river shortly before it flows into the Atlantic, is Ballyshannon (County Donegal).
