King Charles I and a group of Parliamentary Commissioners signed The Treaty of Newport in 1648 in an attempt to reach a compromise between the two sides of the Civil War. However, Oliver Cromwell repudiated the treaty upon his return from defeating the Scots at The Battle of Preston.

Leyland was another medieval Hundred in the county of Lancashire.

The Franciscan Friar John Woodcock was born in Leyland, but was executed by the Stuarts at Lancaster in 1646 for being a Roman Catholic.
