St Fergus, Aberdeenshire, like Bacton, is the site of a gas terminal. In the case of Bacton the gas comes from Holland via the BBL pipeline. In the case of St Fergus the gas comes ashore from the Heimdal, Brent, Fulmar, Goldeneye and Brae fields via three main pipelines.

Longside in Aberdeenshire also has the site of a Long Barrow within its environs.

Buried at Longside is Jamie Fleeman (1713 -- 78), jester to the Laird of Udny and his family -- reckoned probably the last family jester in Scotland; famed locally for his clever and witty repartee. Another long-ago comic (probably better-known, except in Aberdeenshire ) was Will Kempe (c.1560 -- c.1603), actor specialising in comic roles, and associate of Shakespeare. In 1600, for reasons no doubt good and sufficient to him; Kempe morris-danced from London to Norwich (with long pauses).

George John Skipper (1856 – 1948) was a leading Norwich-based architect of the late Victorian and Edwardian period. Much of his best work, dating from around the beginning of the twentieth century, is in Norwich. However, he did work elsewhere, including Hunstanton, where he designed the Grade II listed Town Hall, which dates from 1896.

Castlebay was the main filming location for the 1949 comedy film "Whisky Galore", based on the book of the same name by Sir Compton Mackenzie. He was born on 17th January 1883 in West Hartlepool, Co. Durham.

In his published rendering of English Fairy Tales, the folklorist Joseph Jacobs has his characters in The Three Little Pigs -- the pigs and the Wolf -- living near Shanklin. Jacobs (1854 -- 1916) was born in Australia and died in the USA; but studied at St. John's College, Cambridge.

Shrewsbury is another settlement that was affected by an outbreak of Sweating Sickness in medieval times.

St Chad's Church, Shrewsbury is traditionally understood to be founded in Saxon times, and King Offa is believed to have founded the church, although it is possible it has an earlier foundation even than that. The current church building dates from between 1790 and 1792, when the Scottish architect George Steuart was commissioned to build a new church. He submitted four design proposals, three of which followed a circular plan. Round or oval churches were briefly in vogue during the latter decades of the 18th century, due to the influence of French neo-classicism. Another of his designs is the former Courthouse at Ramsey, Isle of Man, which dates from 1798.

Strabane in County Tyrone is another settlement that was affected by the input of Anglo- Scots during the 17th century Plantation of Ulster.

Strabane is very much a border town. Situated on the East bank of the River Foyle in Co. Tyrone - and therefore in Northern Ireland - its 'twin' on the opposite bank of the river is Lifford, the County Town of Donegal in the Irish Republic.

One might imagine that Donegal town, rather than Lifford, would be the county town of Donegal; but one would of course be wrong. A similar situation obtains, concerning Wiltshire: although Wilton, just west of Salisbury, was its county town until 1889; the county town is now Trowbridge.

Trowbridge was formerly the home of Ushers' Brewery. There was another - completely separate - brewery called Ushers' in Edinburgh.

Penyffordd in Flintshire also has a Millenium Clock Tower.

A little under two miles north of Ysceifiog -- and "part of the community of Ysceifiog" -- is the hamlet of Babell, Flintshire (taking its name from its Babell Methodist chapel. built in 1836) -- the map would suggest that getting from one settlement to the other, by minor roads, involves going up a very steep hill, and down another.
