Do you mean getting painted at Central, as they have just done the platforms as well...Dalreoch may also be next, as it is now a Park & Ride.
...they're getting done during scheduled maintenance to save on costs...does anybody know what the policy with regards to relivering the rest of the fleet is. I assume the class 156's will all get done on scheduled works visits. Is this the plan for the whole fleet or will there be some sort of programme to repaint the other classes on an ad hoc basis. The current progress isnt startling and this does seem to be a very long term project if current progress is maintained.
The 156 I went to Mallaig on was shoddy. It did the job though (just).
The problem is that, if a 322 fails, the replacement 322s are all over in Glasgow Shields Depot, hence the reason three trains a day run to and from Glasgow via Carstairs. It's a shambolic arrangement, which I think may be changed when Airdrie-Bathgate opens for business.
If there's a problem with a 322, it would therefore be likely that a 170, which is the next best thing immediately available in terms of speed, would need to replace it until you could get another 322 over from Glasgow Shields. They'd probably just wait until one is due out on normal passenger service and cancel the reverse working back to Glasgow Central. It's when no 322s are available that a 318 would generally run the North Berwick services, so it's a rare occurrence.
I fully sympathise. The 320s are ghastly.
They cannot run through Glasgow Central LL without modifications to the DOO equipment,
I honestly don't know why they make 156s run that far up. They're halfway knackered anyway and long distances like that in them don't make sense. Why not a 158 or 170?
322s are the same shape as 320s but they are more comfortable go faster don't they. 100MPH I believe? I would like to see that...
Aye they can. I've seen one do it at GLC LL twice, before I was properly into trains.
No they can not. They have been able to at some point, but they are prohibited from the Glasgow Central Low Level lines in passenger service because there aren't DOO monitors to let the driver operate the doors. On a 320, this causes problems due to the driving position, but there are no problems with 318s or 334s (the latter has screens inside the cab IIRC for DOO, with cameras on the side of the body).
The 320s do run through on ECS workings, though. I've also heard of them running attached to 318s as the rear train on Hamilton Circle services (Glasgow-Motherwell via Hamilton and back via Bellshill). If DOO were to be installed (and I'm not sure if it's feasible), then I understand that 320s can run through Glasgow Central Low Level lines in passenger service.
Although the 322s only doing 100mph is a slight problem because parts of the ECML they run on are 110mph.

The fouling tunnels was another one I heard as well, but apparently it's not true because they regularly go through as the only route from Shields Depot to the North Clyde Lines. (They could go Shields-Hamilton-Motherwell-Whifflet-Blairhill, but I don't think that route's used much any more).
AIUI (someone may tell you better) it's to do with the DOO. 334s have cameras on the bodyside and 318s drivers can stand up and check because there's no DOO monitors at a few stations. The 320s' driving position makes checking along the train difficult without the cameras apparently.
EDIT: Despite recently seeing overwhelming agreement that the DOO was the reason, wikipedia disagrees with itself citing both in different articles.

So to clarify FSR liveried units being revinylled as opposed to repainted or a revinyll followed by a later repaint? Am I right the 314s will be repaced by 334s which will in turb be replaced by the new desiros? Will the rate of rebranding be anywhere near as fast as that of Northerns?
Quite a lot I'll wager. Most trains have been painted so many times I'm surprised they still fit the loading gauge.
