Aye I was making a joke, man.

Hamilton West is now 100% finished with the new livery in place.

According to scot-rail forum and photographs, 156439, 156503 & 156512 are now in SR livery, and 156507 has gone in for relivery and exam.

The First Scotrail liveried 156s aren't expected to be reliveried for some time. They've just received a refresh and will be in FSR livery for some time. All the West Highland Line trains are First Scotrail (ie, not SPT) units; they have been fitted with the equipment for RETB signalling. So, don't expect the reliveried trains on the WHL for some time.

Re: Airdrie-Bathgate, there is a timeline here which I hope will be of use. Drumgelloch will close temporarily for relocation in Spring 2010. In Summer 2010, works will begin on the Airdrie station upgrade, which basically seems to involve an upgrade to 3 platforms (reopening the platform opposite P2) and a renovation for the station, although the existing ticket office and shelter will remain.

Looking at the plans, it appears as though the single track section on approach to Airdrie will need to be doubled. This will require a closure of Airdrie station, although probably only for a week or so. They'll need to replace a good bit of the track on the run onto Airdrie station, which will need to allow for trains to through Airdrie all the way to Edinburgh, but also into P1 and the siding as they do just now. The closure will be in the Summer, so probably won't affect your school commute. If they have any sense, they'll do it during the Glasgow Fair (ie, this time next year) to minimise impact.

This all assumes that they do not need to reconstruct the bridge at Craig Street to accommodate the two tracks. I've not visited the station for a while so I don't know if you'll be able to fit them in.

I presume they'll terminate trains short at Coatbridge Sunnyside and bus people to there whilst the line is closed, but I cannot yet find a definitive plan. At the moment, there are no advertised closures on the North Clyde Line in relation to this project.

Tvm for the info.

The bridge at craig street has space for the two lines albeit separated by a strenghtener. Eitherway it will be good to go from Airdrie to EDI. Coming back from Mallaig there was a ticket collector who lived around the corner from Drumg and he says it will be brilliant.

The WHL trip is brilliant, but slow across Rannoch Moor, am I right in saying that it is built on a bed of weeds? I read somewhere that it was limited to 30 for this reason.

I am anticipating what the rolling stock on the A-B will be, I would think that they would cascade the 318s and 334s on to the line, but we want new trains, especially sitting on the 320s every morning and afternoon.

I fully sympathise. The 320s are ghastly.

The original idea seemed to be to retire the 314s next year. The 320s would take over Glasgow South Side operations, the 380s would start Ayrshire and Inverclyde services and 334s/318s would run all North Clyde and Argyle services. This has now not turned out to be true.

The 314s are now going to stay until 2015 I believe, presumably staying on Cathcart. Bad news for South Siders, as they will not be getting a refresh. The 380s will still be going onto the Ayrshire/Inverclyde routes as planned and Argyle/North Clyde will get 334s and 318s. This leaves the 320s seemingly redundant.

I imagine that they will be used to strengthen North Clyde services for the time being. They cannot run through Glasgow Central LL without modifications to the DOO equipment, so they will be seemingly restricted to the North Clyde runs for some time. But Edinburgh-Glasgow services via Airdrie will not be suitable for class 320 operation. 320s can only go at 75mph, but the prolonged periods of 80mph running on the new line render them unsuitable stock. So I imagine that they would be running services terminating at Airdrie and Springburn for the most part. That said, if that's the only routes they'll be operating, they could well supplement services from Glasgow Central High Level. This also allows some 334s and 318s to supplement the new 380s in case of teething problems, and will allow some rather crowded trains to be made into 6 car operation and ease overcrowding. I expect a new rolling stock order in around 2015ish for the Edinburgh-Glasgow via Falkirk electrification, assuming it goes ahead. This stock order would spell the final curtain for 314s.

So, in summary:

314s: Retiring in 2015, will probably remain on Cathcart duties until then.
318s: Will probably move to Argyle and North Clyde on arrival of 380s. Expected to run to Edinburgh.
320s: Uncertain; likely to run some North Clyde services no further East than Airdrie and perhaps some South Side work?
334s: Will probably move to Argyle and North Clyde on arrival of 380s. Expected to run to Edinburgh.
380s: Displace 334s and 318s from Ayrshire and Inverclyde routes upon introduction.

As I've said, it's all speculation at the moment. Very little has been confirmed. Whilst I think 320s could still have a future at Airdrie on a few services, I would not worry about them running right through to Edinburgh. I can see why you hate them (I do too), but at least their retention may work to reduce overcrowding on some services in a year or so (the 0752 ADR-MLN comes to mind).

I believe that the 320's may be kept as a Balloch to Airdrie service as there has been no mention of a Balloch to Bathgate service being provided, just Helensburgh to Bathgate.

I would hope this is the plan as I dislike travelling in the 318's.

I feel that the Bathgate line would now be Scotrails flagship line and should, IMO receive the new 380's.

The timings from HLC-EDB will be longer than by changing at Queen St, SR wont admin that though.

The 380s will go where they are needed most and the Ayrshire and Inverclyde services need these trains due to overcrowding, they will also be used on GARL which is key especially during the 2014 games, expect the 334s to get an internal upgrade to 380 standard similar to what tpe done with their 170s for the A-B route, with 318s probably getting a new exterior livery but interior remaining the same as they have recently been overhauled.

Not so bad (as a South Sider !) ... they do the job they have to do, I don't mind them so much. However it's a shame that a six year stay of execution doesn't justify a refurbishment. I used a couple of the MerseyRail 507/508 fleet a month or two ago and thought that sort of refresh would give the 314s a lot more life.

I've always felt that the 314s were great units. I like travelling on them. Bit they needed a refurbishment, and the continuous life extension has never quite justified it. I don't think they've ever had a proper internal refresh.

334s are due for an overhaul soon, prior to introduction on Airdrie-Bathgate et al. I don't think they'll get an internal refresh just yet (they're only 8 years old), but will probably be painted at this time, and perhaps jut get the tables in as "First Scotrail" suggested.

I would expect 380s to be cleared on the Bathgate line, for convenience. So you may say a couple running along at some point, but they won't be regular workings. The 380s are set for Ayrshire and Inverclyde, who quite rightly deserve the 4 car and 7 car trains. I would also expect 318s to be running quite a bit, even if the main stock is 334s.

Any word on frequencies? I heard that it's 4tph right through to Edinburgh, ie extending all existing services. But the talk of an Airdrie-Balloch service retaining 320s for now suggests that, perhaps, there'll be either more trains to Airdrie or "only" a half-hourly service between Airdrie and Bathgate. With Helensburgh and Milngavie trains running through to Edinburgh as stated on the project site, and the Airdrie-Balloch service mentioned above it seems to me that services will be running as they do in the peaks at the moment; ie 15 minute service to Airdrie, all stops, supplemented by a half hourly express. This would give us off peak 6tph?

I thought they would be to continue on past Bathgate to Waverley.

I'm sure they will be. The plan seems to be that 4tph will run between Airdrie and Bathgate, two of which will run non-stop, the other two calling at all intermediate stations. A big part of the plan is to give Bathgate and Livingston, two of Scotland's largest towns, a 15 minutely rail link to Edinburgh and Glasgow so it's unlikely that trains will be stopping short at Bathgate in either direction.

As far I can see, there will no provision for DOO infrastructure on the stations to Edinburgh therefore I think ScotRail will not be able to operate DOO if they use the 318 even if they wanted to.

Yes. One filled in for a 322 on the North Berwick service.

Yes, 318s are the "spares" in case of a 322 being unavailable/failed. The drivers are trained on 322s and 318s only in addition to the diesel stock. I've also heard of 170s going to North Berwick (presumably a spare being drafted in to cover for a failed 322).

A 334 has supposedly made its way to Edinburgh via Carstairs once before, but this appears to have simply been a training route; it went to Edinburgh and straight back. I cannot confirm if this rumour is true, but it was certainly not in passenger service.

The problem is that, if a 322 fails, the replacement 322s are all over in Glasgow Shields Depot, hence the reason three trains a day run to and from Glasgow via Carstairs. It's a shambolic arrangement, which I think may be changed when Airdrie-Bathgate opens for business.

If there's a problem with a 322, it would therefore be likely that a 170, which is the next best thing immediately available in terms of speed, would need to replace it until you could get another 322 over from Glasgow Shields. They'd probably just wait until one is due out on normal passenger service and cancel the reverse working back to Glasgow Central. It's when no 322s are available that a 318 would generally run the North Berwick services, so it's a rare occurrence.

Shame though, that whatever colours the units wear the seats are still the same old worn out ones with a new set of covers on, the armrests are still falling off and the train heating is still either full on or non existent!

I used to really like the 156s when they were new in the mid to late 80s, but they really do need an interior rebuild now.

That's part of the reason I would never go to Edinburgh via Shotts on one. I think they're nice enough trains, but I would never go on one for that amount of time. Why would I when I could just walk over to Queen Street and get a 170, which has great air con and catering.
