Do you mean getting painted at Central, as they have just done the platforms as well...Dalreoch may also be next, as it is now a Park & Ride.

does anybody know what the policy with regards to relivering the rest of the fleet is. I assume the class 156's will all get done on scheduled works visits. Is this the plan for the whole fleet or will there be some sort of programme to repaint the other classes on an ad hoc basis. The current progress isnt startling and this does seem to be a very long term project if current progress is maintained.

Well I assume SPT ones should get done first, and 158s last (since they were last? into FSR?)

...they're getting done during scheduled maintenance to save on costs...

SPT 156's first, followed by the rest of the SPT fleet. Note the new branding is being focused on the A-B route for opening in 2010.

Why aren't the 314s getting done, now they're being kept on till 2015?
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
The 156 I went to Mallaig on was shoddy. It did the job though (just).

I honestly don't know why they make 156s run that far up. They're halfway knackered anyway and long distances like that in them don't make sense. Why not a 158 or 170?
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
The problem is that, if a 322 fails, the replacement 322s are all over in Glasgow Shields Depot, hence the reason three trains a day run to and from Glasgow via Carstairs. It's a shambolic arrangement, which I think may be changed when Airdrie-Bathgate opens for business.

If there's a problem with a 322, it would therefore be likely that a 170, which is the next best thing immediately available in terms of speed, would need to replace it until you could get another 322 over from Glasgow Shields. They'd probably just wait until one is due out on normal passenger service and cancel the reverse working back to Glasgow Central. It's when no 322s are available that a 318 would generally run the North Berwick services, so it's a rare occurrence.

322s are the same shape as 320s but they are more comfortable go faster don't they. 100MPH I believe? I would like to see that...
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
I fully sympathise. The 320s are ghastly.
They cannot run through Glasgow Central LL without modifications to the DOO equipment,

Aye they can. I've seen one do it at GLC LL twice, before I was properly into trains.

I'm sure I've seen something about the 158s and 170s not being able to be used on the WHL, can't remember exactly what it is though.

AFAIK, externally, the only difference is the extra coach on the 322, but they're specced slightly differently internally, and, as you say, the 322s can do 100mph, compared to the 320s 75mph.

Although the 322s only doing 100mph is a slight problem because parts of the ECML they run on are 110mph.

Man, I gotta be on one of those flying along at 100!

Can't most trains do a little more than their top speed though? Or is that only in BVE! Do they have a North Berwick service on Saturdays, and would it be easy enough to get back to Glasgow Central?

Man, the low level stations in the Glasgow area really need a new look.

Y'know the Yellow walls, they should be painted white, and the white strip that's currently there should be painted dark blue so it would blend in with e new ScotRail logo.

I mean, they have only had small updates since 79. Terrible.

No they can not. They have been able to at some point, but they are prohibited from the Glasgow Central Low Level lines in passenger service because there aren't DOO monitors to let the driver operate the doors. On a 320, this causes problems due to the driving position, but there are no problems with 318s or 334s (the latter has screens inside the cab IIRC for DOO, with cameras on the side of the body).

The 320s do run through on ECS workings, though. I've also heard of them running attached to 318s as the rear train on Hamilton Circle services (Glasgow-Motherwell via Hamilton and back via Bellshill). If DOO were to be installed (and I'm not sure if it's feasible), then I understand that 320s can run through Glasgow Central Low Level lines in passenger service.

hi, that clears up my lack of knowledge on the 320's, I always wondered why they were just on the north clyde lines, always found the painted murals interesting on the cab ends as most of the places aren't on the line worked by the 320's.

I can't help thinking that once A2B is complete that the 320's get even more limited as 334's will work Edinburgh/Milngavie/Helensburgh and is there really a point transfering them to Cathcart Circle or Inverclyde routes to replace 314's? I guess the EGIP stuff wouldn't help the 320's either.

I don't think the stations are far enough apart for them to get above about 60mph between them anyway. The only long-ish stretch is along the branch itself, and I presume thats a lower linespeed anyway. Something geared for 75mph and able go accelerate a bit quicker might actually get out of the 91s quicker.

I thought that the 320's were not allowed through Glasgow central low level due to fears of them fouling the tunnels?

I don't understand why they are not allowed due to DOO controls, is it physically too demanding for the driver to be constantly getting up to lean out the platform side window?

The fouling tunnels was another one I heard as well, but apparently it's not true because they regularly go through as the only route from Shields Depot to the North Clyde Lines. (They could go Shields-Hamilton-Motherwell-Whifflet-Blairhill, but I don't think that route's used much any more).

AIUI (someone may tell you better) it's to do with the DOO. 334s have cameras on the bodyside and 318s drivers can stand up and check because there's no DOO monitors at a few stations. The 320s' driving position makes checking along the train difficult without the cameras apparently.

EDIT: Despite recently seeing overwhelming agreement that the DOO was the reason, wikipedia disagrees with itself citing both in different articles.

Cheers for the info mate, I wasn't being a fud asking about the drivers position, I am just unsure.

Well, I don't think it was in passenger service because it didn't stop, was going very slow and was empty. That's what I meant, as you said an ECS working. So technically, they *can* go through GLC LL, they just can't stop. But that's getting down to semantics ;)

I have been thinking and I have not actually heard of anyone mentioning a Balloch- Bathgate train service. I recieved a leaflet from Jackie Ballie at Dumbarton central one morning and it said it was from Helensburgh, no mention of Balloch.

Sooooooooo, perhaps the 320's will stay on the Balloch to Airdrie or perhaps to Drumgelloch when the line is completed with the 318's and 334's taking up the Helensburgh to Bathgate services?

I was thinking that maybe the 320s would take over the Whifflet, Paisey Canal etc. services when those lines are electrified.

btw, is the East Kilbride line getting the wires too?

So to clarify FSR liveried units being revinylled as opposed to repainted or a revinyll followed by a later repaint? Am I right the 314s will be repaced by 334s which will in turb be replaced by the new desiros? Will the rate of rebranding be anywhere near as fast as that of Northerns?

No.

SPT liveried units are being repainted/revinylled. FSR liveried units will be at a much later time.
The 314s are not being replaced.
The 334s are being replaced on the Ayrshire and Inverclyde Lines only. The Desiros will only operate on these lines. The 334s will continue to operate on the Argyle and North Clyde lines with guest appearances on the Cathcart Circle.

How often do trains have to get repainted FFS? How much of the exorbitant fares we pay is going straight into the coffers of paint suppliers? Quite a lot I'll wager. Most trains have been painted so many times I'm surprised they still fit the loading gauge.

Thanks that makes sense. Only questioning the 314s as they are among the oldest and are not being reliveried...

A lot of it is just vinyl.
XC's voyagers have been vinyled rather than repainted (the roofs are still red).
IIRC, they only get repainted every few years, and anything in between is just vinyl.
