380's will be used in the interim if the infrastructure is available before sufficient units are in service and proved reliable

Wasn't that always an interim plan? Hence the additional Class 320 conversions.

I thought it was meant to be additional, unconverted 321s to serve the east coast routes and free up the 380s from there. I've not seen anything confirming they had arrived and assumed that was down to infrastructure delays meaning they were no longer required.

Does anyone know how many 385s have been produced and where this stands against programme?

If a half hourly electric service was required then guessing there are enough 380 units 2x7 cars already available

Another 2x7 cars would be needed

Dont know diagrams but guessing a couple of 7 car diagrams on Ayrshire could be replaced by 6 cars (2 x 380/0 from Inverclyde to Ayrshire) replaced by 314

A 4 car 380/1 on Inverclyde replaced by 314. A 6 car 318/320 on Lanark, then replace 2x314 on Cathcart etc, with the 380/1 on to Lanark

The 334 should have enough slack to release another 1 or 2 into service, which could replace 318/320 on Argyle line to allow another 2 x314 off Cathcart to Inverclyde, which would release 2x 380/0

Or if the other couple of 320/4 are done.

Hope this makes sense

Other option
Could be to put 170 on to North Berwick for a couple of weeks to release 380s

I don't think so. It was a franchise commitment to operate some 7 car services on the E&G from December 2016, and enough 380s (to work as a 4 car coupled to a 3 car) were apparently available to cover that work. Unfortunately the wires weren't. The arrival of the additional 320s produced a number of diagram changes that were much discussed on here at the time - someone can hopefully confirm, I think they are still in effect - that involed 320s doing limited work to Gourock and on the Cathcart circle!

Class 320s dont operate to Gourock though one managed to get diagrammed onto a service but it was cancelled before it left central . Must be to do with Driver knowledge . They do Newton but not Neilston . ]
I did spy 380 stopping boards at Edinburgh Park funnily enough for 7 and 8 cars

When the wires were due to go live in May there was a plan for short term lease of four, standard (i.e. four car) 321s. Time has moved on and it looks likely that plan has been shelved in favour of 380s with 385s shortly after but still dependent on an unknown date for service trains under the wires. Franchise commitments and other plans are up in the air given the uncertainties around electrification milestones.

385 002 went through Magdeburg Hbf Platform 13 on Friday about 12:35. I was waiting for a RE to Berlin Zoo Bf and I managed to grab a very quick picture. It was part of test train and top and tailed with test train stock.

Bet that confused the German spotters!

This article appears to suggest the first class 385 will run on the E&G sometime in the next few days.
Anyone know anything?

https://www.globalrailnews.com/2017/10/12/hitachi-rolls-out-first-uk-built-class-385/

Hitachi has presented the first Class 385 for ScotRail to be built at its Newton Aycliffe plant.

The rollout comes a few days before a Kasado-built Class 385 takes power from the newly electrified wires between Glasgow and Edinburgh for the first time.

Another three partially built units completed the line-up at a press event earlier today.

The distinctive look of the units is a result of them being the only class in the current Hitachi UK train build with a corridor connection, which Transport Scotland specified as a requirement.

Currently there are two Class 385 units under test in Scotland. Two units are also subject to ride testing on the German rail network as part of the type approval process. This is being done there as it is felt there is not sufficient track access in Britain to complete these tests within the programmed date.

Following the roll out, there was a press tour of the plant to see the Class 385 and Class 800 unit production lines.

Hitachi advise that 71 per cent of all parts are supplied from the UK. These include pipework, windows and internal fit-out. Parts supplied from outside the UK include bogies, which are supplied from Hitachi’s plant in Naples, wiring looms from a Hitachi plant in China, with Japan supplying bodyshells, traction equipment and air conditioning units.

According to 92002 in the Scottish electrification thread, driver training on the E&G is due to start on Monday.

I believe a Class 385 made it on to the E&G last night for the first time for testing.
