Hitachi have an agreement in place with the Port of Tyne (Tyne Dock) for the offloading of train body shells, a number of body shells for the IEP trains having already come into the country that way.Due Newcastle 15th June (Teesport ?)
38 days according to this article:It's not stated in the article as it mainly shows the photos above all, how long did it take the 800s to reach the UK?

The first shipment of five left Kobe in Japan at the end of August on board the giant car carrier Höegh Tokyo. Travelling around 5,000 nautical miles they arrived at the Port of Tyne approximately 38 days later in early October
20 replacing 16 so not that much of an increase.
That's not quite how trains work in real life though. You usually don't send out a 3 car unit and one driving car...It's actually a decrease.
385 20 FC seats per 4 cars - average of 5 per coach
as opposed to
170 16 FC seats per 3 cars - average of 5.33 per coach

As anybody indigenous to the area would surely tell you, Teesport is a long way from Newcastle.

No, but it's the ratio of FC to SC that's the point here, so you have to consider the number of coaches.

Update: Hoegh Amsterdam with the Class 385s now crossing through the English Channel. Anyone know when testing begins at Newton Aycliffe?

Maritime tracking website shows the ship now in the English Channel, headed for Tyne, estimated arrival on Friday.

It arrived 02.26 on Friday and left around 20.00 last night. Was anything of interest off-loaded?
Nothing coming from Hitachi as of yet. Very unusual that they haven't publicly announced the 385s arrival in the UK unlike the Javelins and the IEPs - especially after just under 2 months since delivery. No photos coming from Newton Aycliffe nor has anyone spotted the body shells being carried on the back of lorries to the factory. The only reason I can think of would be that unlike previous deliveries, the 385s that have arrived in the UK are 5 body shells of DMx coaches rather than in a more complete form. There is meant to be a completed 4 car set undergoing testing in Kasado since June but also no news.
Could there be a problem with the first unit? Possibly damaged in transit or something that isn't up to Hitachi's high standards which is why they're keeping it out of the press?
I'd be surprised though as although the bodyshells are a new type most of the train is tried and tested from various versions running around Asia, particularly Japan and Taiwan.

I'm glad it's got a yellow front haha
Thanks,
Ross
Glad we've settled that debate!
Can anyone read Japanese? Maybe get an idea what he ship's name is for anyone who wants to track it?
