Myth ABC123: Telling the Train Manager that you lost the reservation coupon stating what train you are meant to be traveling on with your Advance ticket knowing full well you shouldn't be on it anyway is a perfectly reasonable excuse to give. If all else fails, telling him/her you'll make a complaint and you'll get them sacked is a surefire way of getting your own way too.

I can't help but feel that in a number of cases, it may actually be the case that these ticketless "yoofs" do actually have their "wages" paid by the driver, along with all other taxpayers.

Is there even anything that says nowadays that if first class is not advertised in the timetable it's automatically declassified? I believe there used to be, but it's not in the latest version of the NRCoC.

If there isn't:

Myth 16384: You can sit in first class without asking the guard if the train isn't advertised as having first class/is advertised as not having first class in the timetable.

Myth 901b: It's ok to sit in first class (without permission) with a standard class ticket for a couple of stops without payment because the service is "busy".

Myth 901c: In conjunction with 901b, it is also perfectly acceptable to refuse payment if caught upon arrival at your destination having traveled for the whole duration in first class with your standard class ticket.

Myth 901d: Being verbally abusive and threatening to the member of staff challenging you is a perfectly reasonable response and a sure-fire way of getting other members of the traveling public fighting your corner when any of the above applies.
