Spath is correct (indeed only a few miles from Hixon). The installation was preserved for a while but I suspect was disposed of.

This shouldn't last long:

When was the last time a Sleeper train operated from Manchester Piccadilly to Euston?

I seem to remember that still running until 1990 at least. So I'll go end of summer 1990, September timetable change?

In Great Britain: a narrow-gauge industrial railway “morphed” into part of a standard-gauge almost-useless passenger line. This development came about, late in the railway era; all things considered, the passenger service was surprisingly long-lasting. What situation / which undertakings, described here?

Except for the "almost useless" bit, you could be talking about the Calstock / Callington branch - formerly the East Cornwall mineral Railway.

But you're not - you mean the Devon & North Cornwall Junction Light Railway from Torrington to Halwill Junction. Opened 1925, closed 1965. [ Formerly a clay tramway, but I don't know the name of that ]

You're right, with the Torrington outfit. The clay tramway was the Torrington & Marland Light Railway -- running the first eight miles or so of the full route, southward from Torrington. I'd had it in my head that the T&MLR was 2' 6" gauge; but all the learned sources seem to say 3'.

Would that be the class 411 ( 4-CEP ) after refurbishment at Swindon? The first few carried their proper numbers although the later ones reverted to using the abbreviated form and the early ones were later altered to match.

Would it be the original HST 252?

Wouldn't have thought so. HSTs aren't multiple unit stock in that they can't work in multiple. I'm inclined to think that it's a CEP. I seem to recall that it was 411053 that was the first circa 1980.
Ah, I've just remembered the 313s from 1976.

But they aren't - they can't work in multiple with another one. It must have been a train spotter that thought that they were.

That's not quite the proper definition of a multiple unit. HSTs are an odd case, much like a virus could be defined as both a life form and not a life form HSTs can be both loco hauled stock and a multiple unit.

Yes a power car can move alone (a locomotive) and a Mk3 trailer is non powered (coach) however a HST power car is only usable with HST trailers and HST trailers are only compatible with HST power cabs (multiple unit).

Hence the flippant can of worms comment. Now back to the quiz.
