I could check this - but isn't it a steam train?

edit: I know that Class 98 is used for steam trains, so it probably is, though if it is what is special about this one, I don't know!

I think 98010 was the TOPS number of the diesel loco on the Vale of Rheidol railway that was built in the 80s, I think it was built by the Brechin Mountain railway and it's number followed on from the TOPS numbers of the VoRR steam locos.

Class 98 is indeed the TOPS allocation given to steam engines but there is more to it.

I'd imagine the only 15 inch line long enough and straight enough to try this on would be the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch... as to the engine, no idea so a random guess at Southern Maid purely because it's based on the Gresley A3s.

Almost certainly wrong, so cue everyone reeling off a list of the entire RHDR fleet in turn....

Right railway. Wrong locomotive.
This one wasn't actually steam powered. But it was capable of pulling a proper train.

Right.... err.... the only diesels I'm aware of on the RHDR are numbers 12 and 14; I'll plump for number 12 ( which probably means it was number 14! ). Although your use of "was" suggests something that is no longer on the line, but I can't think what.

That's the one, It was numbered 4 at the time but other locomotives have also carried that number. It's long gone but I think it looked great.
Apparently Rolls Royce weren't so keen...

Am very tempted to give you that but in reality none run close to that speed in service. The top speed is correct in KPH but in one place it happens daily.
