Spath? It was only a few miles away from Hixon crossing.
Tuesday 18 October 2016? The Paralympic special?
Except for the "almost useless" bit, you could be talking about the Calstock / Callington branch - formerly the East Cornwall mineral Railway.
But you're not - you mean the Devon & North Cornwall Junction Light Railway from Torrington to Halwill Junction. Opened 1925, closed 1965. [ Formerly a clay tramway, but I don't know the name of that ]
Would it be the original HST 252?
Wouldn't have thought so. HSTs aren't multiple unit stock in that they can't work in multiple. I'm inclined to think that it's a CEP. I seem to recall that it was 411053 that was the first circa 1980.
Ah, I've just remembered the 313s from 1976.

501's?
Oh dear. Oh deary dear. You just let the cat out of the bag which immediately made its way to a can of worms and opened it...![]()
Eh?...............
That'll be the "HSTs are/aren't a DMU" can of worms.
But they aren't - they can't work in multiple with another one. It must have been a train spotter that thought that they were.
