Congratulations! :D Although technically I think it should be 'Pont Rhufeinig'...not sure though.

Anyway, Paul's floor!

Was that the Lindal-in-Furness incident?

I remember reading about it, a 30 foot hole opened up underneath the track, the locomotive sunk down the hole, but deepened to 60 foot following several attempts to rescue the locomotive, it is still buried to this day. The locomotive was a D Class 0-6-0.

Spot on in all details.

Over to you to set the next one.

I'd discounted the Conwy Valley entirely, assuming there'd be enough fluent Welsh speakers looking at the sign to kick up a fuss, but of course Roman Bridge is in the middle of nowhere! Mind you, I've no excuse having visited the station myself...

Pont Rufeinig is the correct spelling. Because the article pont (bridge) is feminine, it triggers a feminine mutation in the adjective (rhufeinig -> rufeinig).

Might I take advantage of the Open Floor?

Would someone like to name three locations, anywhere on the globe, featuring railways of three different gauges meeting each other in immediate, interchange-type proximity?

Stipulations: the railways concerned should be / have been true public commercial ones (e.g., Betws-y-Coed is out). Situations "present or past" are acceptable; but if "past", relatively recent -- state of affairs having obtained, at least as late as approx. 1960.

Please also state the three gauges involved, at each location.

India must be first choice. Until the recent 'unigauge' project Silguri Jct had broad, standard and narrow meeting.

Oddly enough, this location (Darjeeling Himalayan Railway meeting wider gauges, at Siliguri and / or newer junction New Jalpaiguri some km. away), is thought to have been in fact, the only such three-gauge set-up in India. Could you be more specific, giving actual figures, re width of the three gauges?

Two more locations sought !

I have been to Jenbach in Austria..

The OBB main line is standard gauge
Achenseebahn is Metre gauge (rack system)
Zillertalbahn is 760mm gauge

Montreux, Switzerland. Standard gauge plus MOB at 1metre and MVR at 800mm

Both the above, correct.

martinsh: to the best of my knowledge, you're in error re the 800mm part -- the line to Rochers-de-Naye runs not from Lausanne, but from Montreux (as per Castle Cary's answer re MVR).

My original -- perhaps unreasonable -- idea, was for contestants to offer three three-gauge locations per person. So far, as we see, it's panned out as one per person. Two correct so far (theageofthetra has not yet come back with the exact gauge measurements concerned). Wondering what will be the best to do? -- hopefully, some arrangement comeable-to, which all will be OK with.

My knowledge is inadequate to come up with three. My only other original thought was Kuala Lumpur, where, if my memory is correct (which I am having doubts about), the central station has standard gauge metro, a non-standard gauge main line (?), and the Monorail terminus (do monorails have a 'gauge'?). I await correction.

Nice challenge, by the way.

KL Sentral doesn't actually have the Monorail-its connected via a long bridge a bit like Waterloo/Waterloo East. Still its a good suggestion though

Re this three-gauge-places question, I'm getting to feel that (though, Castle Cary, thanks for compliment) "I've created a monster", as people say -- the thing having been on my part basically ill-framed and ill-conceived (and the Kuala Lumpur scene is completely beyond my ken !). Am feeling that it might be best to knock the monster on the head, and -- apologising to all responders -- ask for the question to be abandoned, and "open floor" to be declared.

The characters in the original Rev W Awdrey Railway Series were all based on real locomotives. For the UK built characters geographically which of their real-life equivalents were built furthest North, South, East & West and name the works.

It may be a (dedicated - but not that long - shorter than many tube interchanges in London) bridge, but the monorail station is called Sentral.

Edit - sorry - just seen that this is now a closed subject!

My best suggestions.

North - Edward a Furness Railway K2 class

South - Thomas himself Being an LB&SCR B2 class.

East - Toby being a Wisbeach and Upwell Steam Tram.

West- My only suggestion her would be Montague (Duck), a GWR Pannier Tank.

Close but there are ones further North and West.'Toby' would have been built at Stratford works-can't think of one further East. For further clarity I am not including the real life characters that appeared-Scotsman, Stepney etc.

theageofthetra's Rev. Awdrey question, seemingly excellently fulfilling that role -- stuff about which I know less than about the culture of ancient Sumeria, but "each to their own".

May I request further clarification? Are we to include the Narrow Gauge engines of the Skarloey Railway, and Miniture engines of the Arlesdale, or just Sir T Hatts Standard Gauge engines?

All Sodor fictional Locomotives based on UK built real life ones from the Awdrey original books. I am after the character, what they were based on and where they were made.

I would like to revise my North suggestion, as I forgot about Donald and Douglas based on Caledonian Railway 812 class build at St Rollox Works.
West is still Eluding me, if not Duck then I want to suggest Henry Based (post Flying Kipper mishap) was based on a Stanier class 5mt (Black 5), a good number of which were built at Horwich Works near Bolton, but without looking at a map I cant remember if that's further west than Swindon.
Failing that I'm sure one the Skarloeys locos is based on a loco from Tallyn but I cant remember which one.

For the west, I suggest it would be skarloey and rheneas, as suggested by deltic, as they are based on the talylln railway engines, built by fletcher Jennings at there lowca works. For east, I would suggest primrose, based on the SECR P Class loco in the stepney the bluebell engine book. For South, stepney, the LBSCR A1x loco built at Brighton.

I did say earlier only the fictional characters.

The furthest North and South have been correctly given as Donald/Douglas- St Rollox works in NE Glasgow. South was Thomas-Brighton Works.

Final clues:-

East- a small engine with a regal name.

West -another of Skarloeys Scottish built friends.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Ok as no one got them all here are the answers and may as well make it open floor unless there are any objections -

North- Donald/Douglas-Caledonian Rly St Rollox works NE Glasgow

South- Thomas -LBSCR Brighton Works

East- Rex (R&ER River Esk) - Davey Paxman Ltd Colchester.

West- Duncan- Andrew Barclay & Sons Kilmarnock.
