Coming in belatedly; and staying Portugal-related: the history in Portugal of rail nationalisation vis-a-vis independent companies, has been complex and nuanced. Within that context, however: which line was for a very long time, Portugal's only fully privately-owned and -operated one; and the only electric railway in the country?

Opened in 1843 where was the first international railway in the world?
And hopefully to clarify the definition of international it was an international border then and still is an international border.

A total guess: somewhere in France, to somewhere in Belgium? -- no idea where, in either.
