4 out today 431/34/56/58. 1 x 4 car 150 DMU and 1 x 2 car 150 DMU covering, both off SP.
424 AN, 442 & 450 at Brodies, 448 SP? (failed pm at Wigan 10/4)

Presume that 450 went to avoid the WCML block (on until 18 April) so until 442 comes back its 6 769's for 6 diagrams!! Madness.

Indeed 424 has sat down at Southport this morning on the 08.03 to be replaced by a 2 car 150 which left half an hour late.

5 started the day (which condsidering there are only 6 available....) 424/31/34/56/58. 1 x 4 car 150/156 DMU covering off AN.
However as above, the troublesome 424 (which failed on Friday, not out Sat) has jibbed again at Southport early doors and been replaced by a 2 car DMU split from a 4, thus yet another short form statistic.

424 has only just returned from Brodie's. What do they actually do up there?
Door work & corrosion repairs, some have c4 as well (only 2 so far)

Tues 14/4
4 started the day on diagram 431/34/48/56 with 1 x 2 car 156 DMU covering from NH and 1 x 2 car 156 DMU covering off AN but 424 appears to have been 'fixed' at Southport and is now working a diagram off there. Presume will replace 1 of the DMU's but who knows!

Wed 15/4
4 start the day 424/31/34/56. 2 x 2 car 150 DMU covering off AN, as no 769's available there.

Thurs 16/4
4 start the day 431/34/48/56. 1 x 4car 156 DMU covering off SP, 1 x 2 car 156 DMU covering off NH.

Fri 17/4
5 start the day 431/34/48/56/58. 1 x 4 car 150/156 DMU covering off SP.

Sat 18/4
5 start the day 424/31/34/48/58. 1 x 4 car 150/156 DMU covering off SP.
769442/50 at Brodies, 769456 at AN.

3 start the day 431/48/56. 1 x 2 car 156 DMU covering off AN, 1 x 2 car 150 DMU & 1 x 2 car 156 DMU covering off SP.
Of the others, 424 went to SP on 18/4 after service but then to AN, 434 and 458 went to AN on 18/4 after service, 442/50 are at Brodies.

Tues 21/4
5 start the day 424/31/34/48/56. 1 x 4 car 150 DMU covering off SP.

37884 + 769442 on return from Brodies 13.07 ex- Kilmarnock currently nearing destination at AN. Back to 7 available shortly.

Wed 22/4
Same 5 start the day as 21/4. 1 x 4 car 150 DMU covering off SP.

Thurs 23/4
As 22/4.

Fri 24/4
4 started the day 424/34/48/56. 1 x 4 car 150 DMU covering off SP, 1 x 2 car 150 DMU covering off AN.
769458 has also been out (presume on test) from AN-Lime St and return this morning.
Of the others, 431 finished last night at AN, 442 at AN (presume waiting to enter traffic ex-Brodies) & 450 at Brodies.

Sat 25/4
Not a good day so far. It appears that 2 started the day 424/34. 1 x 2 car 156 DMU covering off AN, 1 x 4 car 150 DMU and 1 x 2 car 150 DMU covering off SP, 1 x 2 car 150 DMU covering off NH.
However 769424 has run into difficulties (twice so far) terminating at Bolton on a Southport-Stalybridge (brakes) and although being turned around to form a Bolton-Southport, failed at Gathurst with brakes (again). The 4 car 150 DMU covering off SP has been split, and 1 of the other DMU diagrams on the Southport-Stalybridge/Ox Rd axis has also failed (brakes). Now it used to be a NR 'rule' that if only 1 769 was left in service, that had to be taken out of service as there would be nothing to rescue it if that failed, but 434 appears to be soldiering on, at the present time.
Locations of the oos units:- 424??, 431 AN 23/4, 442 AN (ex-Brodies 21/4), 448 NH 24/4, 450 Brodies, 456 AN 24/4, 458 AN since 18/4 but out on test 24/4.

At least they all get Sundays off...

Later:- 769434 has also pulled up lame this afternoon, leaving none in service.

2 started the day 448 + another, both off AN. However the second unit (unidentified) got to Lime Street from AN and failed (usually ECS to Man. Vic). This was replaced at Man Vic by a 2 car 150 purloined from a NH ECS. The other 4 diagrams are being covered by 1 x 2 car 156 DMU off NH, 2 x 2 car 150 DMU off SP, and 1 x 2 car 156 DMU off SP.
However by mid-morning 769456 has been allocated from Southport replacing a 2 car 150 DMU.

This thread is approaching 10 years old and it wasn't until Monday, 17th May, 2021 that the first units ran in regular service when I sampled 769434. It seemed an excellent old train.

Since then users of the line have experienced a lottery of a service and many must have been totally deterred from rail travel. There seems no end to the woes, killing the route by breakdowns.

It's an awful situation for users to/from Southport and also for Northern managers apparently stuck with these unreliable trains for another 5 years of pain. But it's not just Southport line users. 4 diagrams are being covered by other DMUs today. Where have they been borrowed from? What should they have been doing?

Users from Ashington to Edale are unable to board even as sardines on busy days. More serviceable trains are needed all round so 769's woes are knocking on across the network. 5 years so far to get them working, 5 more years to go. What a nightmare.

769448 has been removed from service at Wigan Wallgate this afternoon, having spent over half an hour at Hindley with door problems. 769456 has also been pulled from service on arrival at Wigan Wallgate from Southport, also quoting doors (but this could be as last unit standing, it has to be pulled due to a lack of rescue unit if it failed).
Thats means none, nil, zero in service of the 6 diagrams.

How many units are there in the fleet that are nominally operable with Northern?
On the West side we have eight 769's (for six diagrams), plus 41 150/1's, plus 150225, plus 32 156's, plus seven "loan" Heaton 156's to cover five Cumbrian Coast turns due to the tunnel closure.

There's at least 5 150s and the same number 156s under heavy repair, plus the regular ones at Newton Heath you're probably 20 down, then you've the others stepping up on various 195 jobs on the CLC and WY - SY work.

The formations were altered in a more permanent fashion last year already as has mentioned above on the Blackburn and Headbolt Lane work to keep enough units free so that Southport and Ashton under Lyne do get a few trains a day!

It really is quite staggering when you stop and wonder. Presumably the 769/9s would be "newer" and there are more of them, but would they be more complex in use with the 750V gear to deal with.

The question that begs is - do the customers on the Southport - Manchester axis recognise the poor trains as 769s as distinct from 150s which are quite similar in terms of vehicles ?

There's a lot more complexity to the 769/9 than just the "Tri Mode" capability. All sorts of things that GWR wanted adding into the units like air con and Driver Only Operation CCTV only add to the complexity.

Tues 28/4
2 start the day 434/56.
1 x 2 car 156 DMU covering off NH, 1 x 2 car 156 DMU covering off AN, 1 x 2 car 150 DMU covering off SP, 1 x 4 car 150 DMU covering off SP.
Am now hearing 'high pollen' getting into the radiators. That excuse hasn't been used for some time!

Wed 29/4
4 start the day 424/34/48/56.
1 x 2 car 150 DMU & 1 x 4 car 150 DMU covering, both off SP.
Edit:- later 424 caused chaos and plenty cancellations by failing at Bescar Lane in the evening. (ta to Matt on wnxx for this)

Thurs 30/4
3 start the day 434/48/56.
1 x 2 car 156 DMU covering off SP - but has failed and been replaced by another 156 taken from splitting a 4 car Headbolt Lane-Blackburn, missing a Man Vic-Stalybridge-Southport trip, cancelled), 1 x 2 car 150 DMU covering off SP, and 1 x 4 car 150 DMU covering off SP
Of the others 424 should have finished at SP 29/4 but see above, 431 AN missing since 23/4, 442 AN back from Brodies 21/4 & not yet returned to traffic, 450 Brodies, 458 AN missing since 18/4 but did a AN-Lime Street and return test on 24/4.

Fri 1/5
3 start the day 434/48/56
1x 2 car 156 DMU covering off AN, 1 x 2 car 156 DMU covering off SP, 1 x 4 car 150 DMU covering off NH.

Sat 2/5
4 start the day 424/34/42/56. 442 first day back in traffic since return from Brodies.
1 x 2 car 156 DMU & 1 x 2 car 150 DMU covering, both off SP. Indeed 150138 has been on a 769 diagram now for 7 consecutive days, not bad for a near 40 year old........

Mon 4/5
2 start the day 424/42. There are reasons for this though, as the line (s) out of Liverpool are closed today due to engineering works, so nothing out of AN (normally 2 sets). These 2 sets have been replaced by 2 x 2 car 158 DMU's, both starting from Manchester Vic in service (but coming off NH). This is not unknown, but is rare these days for 158's to work Wigan-Southport (unless engineering or diversions east of Wigan is in place).
The other 2 diagrams have been covered by 1 x 2 car 156 DMU and 1 x 2car 150 DMU both off SP. 150138 has now been on a 769 diagram for 8 consecutively 769 diagrammed days.
I addition 424 which should finish tonight at AN is going to SP, whilst 442 which should go to SP is going to NH.

Tues 5/5
4 start the day 424/42/48/56. 1 x 2car 150 DMU (yes 150138 for the 9th day in a row) and 1 x 2 car 156 DMU (156421 for the 5th day in a row) covering, both off SP.
However 442 (on its 3rd day in traffic following 11 weeks at Brodies) has pulled up lame, looks like had a hissy fit when changing over to diesel at Ince early this morning, and has been replaced (having got to Southport and back to Wigan) by a 150 DMU, itself split (again) from a Stalybridge-Southport (so 2 more short forms)
Of the others 431/34/58 all at AN since 23/4, 1/5 & 18/4 respectively, 450 at Brodies.

Wed 6/5
5 start the day 424/34/48/56/58. Note 458 1st day in traffic since 18/4.
1 x 2 car 150 DMU covering off SP. Yes, 150138 for the 10th day in a row on a 769 diagram (albeit a 10th day shortform in a row!)

Thurs 7/5
5 start the day 424/34/42/56/58. 1 x 2 car 156 DMU covering off AN.
Some changes this morning with 424/34 swapping diagrams, whilst 150138, after 10 days on a 769 diagram, obviously caught a 769 'cold' yesterday and had to be replaced mid-way through the day by a 150 (itself from a 4 car split)

Fri 8/5
5 start the day as per 7/5. 1 x 2 car 150 DMU covering off AN.

Sat 9/5
5 start the day 434/42/48/56/58. 1 x 2 car 156 DMU covering off NH.

Mon 11/5
6 (as diagrammed) start the day for the first time since 10 April. 424/34/42/48/56/58.
Of the others 431 at AN since 23/4, 450 at Brodies since 10/4.

Tues 12/5
6 start the day (same as Mon 11/5). Second time since 10 April.
Couple of points from yesterday. Despite completing the day, 458 had problems changing modes at Ince, whilst 442 caused problems at Man Vic losing power on electric, carried on diesel for the rest of the day later finishing at SP not AN (possibly needing fuel) whilst 448 went to AN instead of SP.

A shiny 769 trundled through Bolton around 1715 out of service and running on its engine. Couldn't see the number so likely 442 then?

Yes by the time they got it going the next Southport had already caught it up! Fitter tried everything he could but it didn't not want to go forward on 25kv. Sorry that was yesterday but probably still not right!

There were also delays at Victoria around the same time due to trespasser on the line

Problems (again) between Southport and Wigan this evening. 769456 in trouble on 2O72 18.03 Southport-Manchester Ox Rd between Parbold and Wigan, terminated 94 late at Wigan Wallgate, following train 769442 on 18.30 2W66 Southport-Stalybridge 85 late at Wigan, then 19.03 Southport-Ox Road also terminated at Wigan, next 769448 on 2W68 19.30 Southport-Stalybridge 50 late at Wigan. Also seems to have been problems at Wigan heading towards Southport with at least 2 trains terminated short (as well as a 3 hour gap coming out of Man Ox Road)

Wed 13/5
4 start the day. 424/34/48/58. 1 x 2 car 150 DMU & 1 x 2 car 156 DMU covering, both off AN.

Thurs 14/5
4 start the day 424/34/42/58. 1 x 2 car 156 DMU covering off Wigan Wallgate Sdgs (not SP), 1x 2 car 156 DMU covering off NH.

Fri 15/5
5 start the day 424/34/42/48/58. 1 x 2 car 156 DMU covering off SP.
However 424 has failed at Southport with the 08.03 2072 to Mcr Ox Rd cancelled & 09.27 2W07 return cancelled between Ox Road and Wigan Wallgate. 156426 has been purloined from a Headbolt Lane-Blackburn (so another short form) to form a late 10.09 Wigan-Southport and in addition the cavalry is on its way from NH in the form of 150103 with a 5W07 to Southport and has now stepped up, going onto 2O75 11.03 Southport-Ox Road. Meanwhile 156420 (itself covering a 769 diagram) appears to be being paired up with 156426............
Later it appears that 424 has been fixed and has worked 12.03 2O76 Southport-Ox Road. However 434 has now pulled up lame with 'door problems' that resulted in more cancellations still currently happening. Must be fun in control!

Sat 16/5
3 start the day 424/42/48. 1 x 2 car 156 DMU & 1 x 2 car 150 covering off AN, and 1 x 2 car 156 DMU covering off NH.
Of the others 431 at AN since 23/4, 434 failed Wigan 15/5, 450 Brodies since 10/4, 456 ?? last noted 11/5, 458 should have finished at SP 14/5 but??
442 started this morning from Wigan Wallgate CS, looks like SP was full up of demics.

Mon 18/5
New tt but little changes........
3 start the day as Sat 16/5. 1 x 2 car 156 DMU covering off AN, 1 x 2 car 150 DMU covering off SP, 1 x 2 car 150 DMU covering off NH.

Tues 19/5
Another poor day.
Probably 3 started the day 424/34/42. Somewhat difficult to ascertain as unit that formed 5J02 AN-Man Vic, then 2J02 06.32 Man. Vic-Southport got as far as Bolton and failed, and has since retired to NH, being replaced by 150142 eventually purloined from NH with the Bolton-Southport part of 2W02, the return Southport-Stalybridge, and Stalybridge-Man Vic part of 2W11 Stalybridge-Southport all cancelled. Of the other 2 diagrams 1 x 4 car 150/156 DMU covering off SP, and 1 x 2 car 156 covering off NH (for 769448 which should have gone there last night and is not out today).
Of the others, 431 at AN since 23/4, whilst 456 last seen in action 11/5, 458 14/5, with 450 at Brodies since 10/4 (but 448 still has to go there for c6 to complete the set which has so far taken 16 months)

Wed 20/5
Same 3 start the day 424/34/42. 1 x 2 car 150 DMU covering off AN, 1 x 4 car 150/156 DMU covering off SP. The 6th set is undetermined as yet as nothing showing as allocated to 2W01 Man Vic-Southport and the rest of the diagram, but none of the other 769's are showing as out.

Has been 3 all week, reduction in diagrams with new tt??

Curious that on DIAGRAM: AN 292 SX 769/4 LTP the 769 starts the day by moving from Spring Branch to Wallgate vs starting at North Western bay platform and keeping the pan up for the first run to Stalybridge

Both platform 1 and 3 are occupied at that time.

Platform 1 has a departmental (maintenance) train for 05:48 to 06:02 - the path appears rarely used.
Platform 3 has a Northern to Liverpool from 05:30 to 05:58.
