I don't know if it would work in this situation but last Saturday I bought a bottle of wine at Sainsburys at 10.15 in the morning and it seemed pointless buying a bag so I just carried it home through the fairly crowded streets. It is incredible how people give you a wide berth if you do this.

I literally had to resort to the same thing a while back when disruption meant that the XC 170 I was about to alight at Cambridge was going to be the first train from Cambridge to Ely for about 3 hours. People were 8 deep on the platform crowding the doors... to get out through.

Worked because no physical contact was necessary at all!

Today, travelling with a large holdall slung over my shoulder, I noticed a variant of this (and this was not during a busy time at all, for the entirety of the 2-leg journey of over 3 hours I had a 4+table bay to myself) - bag blindness. On several occasions, people just walked straight into it, including when I was standing still with plenty of circulation space around me.

I despair sometimes.

The collisions occurred on station platforms between the trains. The point regarding a bay of 4 + table being available throughout was just to demonstrate how quiet the railway was, and therefore how there was ample space to walk around me and my bag rather than into them.

I can't remember, but probably.

I do derive particular enjoyment from walking directly towards people with smartphones and only moving aside at the very last second, just after they've woken up and think a collision is unavoidable. Though I wasn't doing that in this case; it's best reserved for busy shopping streets when not encumbered with 15 kilos over one shoulder.

That’s almost as rude!

Being tall and broad I just stand in the middle of the door completely blocking it glaring at them until they move. If they don’t it tends to result in something like “Are you going to move out of the way? You’re not going to get on until we have got off”.

A teenage girl was among those trying to force her way on a class 158 which had just terminated from Fishguard during the half term holidays. I shouted an instruction to let people off first. Her mother said 'that's my daughter!', my response was ' so get her told!'

It doesn't sound extreme to me, forcing your way onto a train while others are getting off can be dangerous, what would you do in that situation then?

I generally say something like "Please let people off the train first" and if they still don't give people sufficient room to exit, I may then raise my voice.

If you don't like being told off, don't misbehave! I find your responses to this thread puzzling; you've not been guilty of this by any chance?

No I agree with you that it is very impolite to barge on a train without letting people off of the train first

I just wouldn’t like to be shouted at by a stranger! I also don’t think it’s the place of anyone but a staff member to do that but meh whatever.

I`d shout at anyone that gets in my way and puts me in danger, no good waiting for a staff member there may not be one around anyway, in such a situation I usually say do you mind if I get off first, I won`t even say please. I can`t stand ignorance and if I was being ignorant I`d expect to be told about it. Sometimes you have to take control of a situation as an adult. All credit to Yorkie for saying "please", I certainly wouldnt.

As I mentioned in a thread I started the other day (I'm going to ask Admin to delete it as it duplicates this one), over the weekend my train arrived in Crewe and the door was completely horded from the outside as I tried to get off. There had been some disruption so I can understand peoples frustration but I stood in the doorway with my arms open in the style of Moses parting the waves and then smiled. People moved out of the way and one good natured lady was laughing. It did help that I currently look like Waingro in the film Heat but I am actually a physical coward and despite my appearance am not aggressive at all.
