Has there been any conformation of the configuration of the extra carriages? Are they both going to be Standard Class?

And yes, I imagine Brum and Liverpool runs will be allocated 9-cars, with 11-cars being given to Scotland and Manchester based on my interpretation of current loadings. Peak time might be interesting though! Especially as jopsuk says when a 9-car turns up instead of an 11!

I can see that working very well :/ I very much doubt the 11 coach sets will stick rigidly to the booked diagrams, which will no doubt cause reservation headaches!

Not if the two new coaches are unreserved.

aren't there any trains which are reservations compulsory? Other than the sleepers

A bit off-topic but FGW used to run a few services, such as Brighton-Bristol (almost always worked by a single 158 meaning it's standing room only from Brighton) which were advertised in the timetable as 'reservation compulsory'. I've no idea whether this was enforced.

Isn't it a requirement that all trains (regardless of TOC) must have at least one unreserved coach?

From what I have been led to believe at work, when somebody doesn't have a seat reserved we are supposed to direct them to coach E. Seeing as this is the last coach in standard class I would assume this means no reservations?

In my experience, it wasn't - but I can only speak for the Bristol end of the route.

I did Brighton to Bristol Temple Meads last year when I caught the 0900 FGW service, getting a seat was not hard to do at the Brighton end but saying that it would probably be harder to get a seat in the peak.

Yes, the additional "insert" carriages are both standard, see my earlier reply for their configuration

4-car XC Voyagers don't run with an unreserved coach, which is coach B on 5-cars.

What's stopping them? The train manager would just have to advise people to use a particular part of the train as they do with the East Coast HSTs when they serve stations with platforms shorter then the train or just use SDO as the FGW HSTs do.

I was actually referring to the haulage capability of a 57/3 but I imagine it could handle 11 coaches, just I always thought the weight of a pendo coach was significantly higher than a mk2/3 say.

Yeah even the unpowered trailers are about 45t. And I believe some of the powered coaches are somewhere around the 52t mark. I'll have to check that figure though. So adding an extra two carriages to a Pendo is the equivalent of adding an extra 3 mark2s/3s to a train. That's got to ruin the power to weight ratio a bit, seeing as the extra carriages are unpowered.

Interesting that there are 62 extra carriages being built, same as the original Pendolino order size before it got cut back to 53. Completely daft that it's going to cause a mixed Pendolino fleet of 11 and 9 carriage trains, as, as has been said above, there is no way the 11 carriage trains will stick to appropriate diagrams. The new carriages will definitely both be standard class, first class is already seriously overprovided for on the Pendolinos.

I'm told that pendolino power is de-rated so they shouldn't have any problems when two unpowered trailers are added.
